but what if it is true?

It still doesn't mean different cultures can't inhabit one city . And I can't say I've noticed many NZ cultural institutions being destroyed by recent immigrants .

“The need of human beings to belong to and unite behind a common culture, institutions and values is part of human nature. This need is hard-wired because of its survival value during evolutionary history. It cannot be overcome by government policies and coercion aimed at its elimination.”

Sounds like one mans opinion to me .Ok more than one , but personally I don't feel the need to unite behind a (single ) common culture with anyone. My wife is from a different culture , but her values are closer to mine than some of my immediate family .
I have friends from various cultures and races , and nights out with other westies might be more fun occasionally , but not particularly healthy :)

80% of population growth over the last 20 years has come from offshore

    I don't think the 80% figure is correct ,
net migration peaked at around 40,000 in 2003 ,
http://wikinewzealand.org/?cat=232 but overall population increased by around 78,000 , so even in peak years it was nowhere near 80%

First you could convince me why population increase is good policy and then why I should welcome people with a different culture and language, rather than people who will integrate faster and speak the same language.

One benefit of those "different" people could be house prices won't be affected as much... http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/research_and_publications/analytical_notes/2013/AN2013_10.pdf

It seems Europeans are more likely to drive up property prices .
But in the long run I think the reasons in Chris Waughs last post are more relevant than this .

cherry picking ? did you see the bit about the last 40 years ?
" natural increase accounted for 90 percent of population growth, higher than the historical average of 80 percent over the last 40 years."

I think this is less misleading :
    (from http://www.dol.govt.nz/publications/research/migration-trends-1011/03.asp)

"3.2 Impact of migration on population growth

New Zealand’s estimated resident population at 30 June 2011[14] was 4,405,300, which is an increase of 37,500 (0.9 percent) from the 30 June 2010 estimate of 4,367,800. Population growth in the year to 2010/11 was due to a natural increase (that is, more births than deaths) of 33,600 (90 percent) plus net permanent and long-term migration of 3,900 (10 percent). In 2010/11, natural increase accounted for 90 percent of population growth, higher than the historical average of 80 percent over the last 40 years. Figure 3.1 shows that the natural increase is constant over time, but the fluctuations in the annual population change follow the movements in net migration."

And yeah to blather on about restaurants again, when the Indian family cooking your dinner turn out to be just lovely people its hard to think the city would be better without them.

Was it Rowan Atkinson ( in character ) that said "But we've got the recipe now , so can't they go back?" .

I agree about having a purple mate making a difference , but on the other hand I'm sure lots of rascists have mates whose background they ignore , but still generalise about other races or cultures as a group. ( I'm still tempted to at times )
