As someone who grew up in Napier I confirm what Tom said. Art deco wasn’t even remotely cool until a couple of generations after the fact. Deco buildings and homes were boxy and ugly because they were all built at the same time after the quake (and Chapman-Taylor houses were the arty gems). People were just building what was modern and sensible at the time - authentic and pragmatic - and the architectural charm (and tourism potential) was appreciated much later.

I know that the publisher hosted a scheme (launched before the accident) to help get Encircled Lands to Tuhoe, because although the price is pretty reasonable it’s outside the means of many of the marae whose history is told in the book.

I keep two hives and one of the interesting things about the bees is the way they get used to you as part of their environment – the kids can stand in the flight path and the bees bounce right off them. It’s only visitors who are stung.

I did a whistle-stop tour from the People’s Republic of Boulder-side a few years back and remember the strong feeling that the Rockies are simply far older than the Southern Alps.
After a day watching the elk bugle I stopped at a diner in Estes Park which was having Oktoberfest. Elk was on the menu so I chose that. I got chatting to the proprietor: surely the elk does not come straight from the national park? Is there a special season for elk harvesting? Oh no, she said. Haven’t been but always wanted to. IcelandAir has just published a list of things to do which makes me want to go even more (and no, I don’t work for them). Some look fun for kids. Many seem to involve drink.

I do like to see a bit of mud and grit in an Austen adaptation. "Persuasion" I remember as very good at that: grand ladies dismounting from carriages had to step around the horse shit, which seemed just as it ought.
