  • Hard News: Doug the Goth,

Think my defining memory of Goth is our (really quite evil) white cat taking pot shots at the large black hairdos of my Goth Sister and Gothy Boyfriends from the staircase.

I know it’s almost pop, but is there no room for the cure in your hearts:

And the video which answers that long standing question about how many goths you can fit in a wardrobe:

Compare and contrast the eversoslightly camper but at the same time blander 90s version.

  • Hard News: It's Choice, bro,

Is that really Stirling castle as the first image you see when you go in?

Scotland Revealed in Winter is the kind of cheapo PSB we are getting up here as STV angles itself as the public broadcaster of choice if independence ever happens.

Literally, stick camera up on helicopter, fly aboot and talk over the footage.

  • Southerly: Liveblog: Moving House (Literally),

    @islander = Och.

@Emma = Yay at the movers. Folks here see house moving as an amusingly alien concept.

  • Southerly: Liveblog: Moving House (Literally),

Is the new house near the Dog dosing strip? My frequent sing-alongs on drives from Dunedin demands it so.

Watching the twitter feed is a bit like watching The Wages of Fear (or Sorcerer if you are of a more 80s Synth bent)

  • Capture: Better Food Photography,

The other thing is that food photography doesn't age well at all, there's always subtle differences in how the food is presented (tablecloths, wooden tables, plates, cutlery) that make anything out of season stick out like a sore thumb.

  • Capture: Better Food Photography,

    Attachment

My only ever addition to the canon of crap food photography was this pork vindaloo, but it was just for a press shot so the stabber was more important than the dish itself.

We do a lot of food photography in our job promoting beef lamb and pork and that hellishly difficult to get right.

Think the usual rule of thumb is to 'slightly' undercook it, let it cool then put a shine on with some oil. Getting good food photography, in our case that you can use on a billboard or tube poster, is a tricky business.

  • Muse: Freakanomics (TVNZ Edition),

Thought the whole point of these things was that they were funded by the $1 phonecalls to vote. Guess that funding model only works with an XX or XXX million population, rather than getting the equivalent of half the population to vote. :)

Surely they could just dredge an old kiwiana-retro talent quest format from the 70s, rather than sending money to Mr Cowell for a fairly bland format.

And although someone pretty talented tends to win, our own SuBo for instance, or the dance group that won a while ago. It's really just a freakshow in the main, it's like the 'bad audition' bits of xfactor/idol stretched to a whole show.

Guess Dancing with the stars and masterchef are in a similar. But that money's going to the BBC, and that has to be a good thing, eh?

  • Southerly: Village People,

Oooh, do you have a recipe for your 'everything free' cake? First daughter and possibly second son has similar allergies (although not soy, strangely/luckily) and that cake looks delish.

  • Field Theory: 25 Things you need to be a…,

This list sounds like the best excuse I've ever heard for buying a new TV.

"yes, but if I don't get it I'm not a man , and can I buy a gun?"

  • Hard News: Funky Seaside Village Revisited,

Nice article, for someone who was a new arrival to NZ in 2002 to the bustling metropolis of *cough* Dunedin it was amusing home some of the things were still true.

My dial up connection with xtra was certainly quicker than my Freeserve one in 2002 edinburgh, but cheap pervasive broadband was just kicking off as I excitedly hopped on my plane to Changi.

Seemed to hit NZ and a move to wellington with the backdrop of huge positivity in the country (The Rhombus album one the one on the stereo as we packed the guts of our Duncan Street flat for the big drive north) and it seemed to be a great time to be yung in nz.

Interesting thing though was that Britain from the media suddenly looked shiny and exciting too. Oddly I remember movies with a sunstroked london and the now cliched shot of the shiny gherkin and thinking that it was moving on too.

Moving back to Edinburgh though it just underlines how grey it still is here. your piece made me look forward to getting back and brining our small sciwi child back to whatever funky seaside village we end up in.
