Hard News: Auckland City Nights, in reply to
We run one of the new eateries at North Wharf. Not one that's been mentioned in this thread (so far). We have other eateries in central Auckland staffed by intelligent, friendly, skilled people who are committed to giving excellent service, and they are doing the same down at North Wharf. We spent considerable time designing a space for our North Wharf cafe that reflected some of the surrounding history and activity and invested in a quality fit out. We've been very busy and have employed more permanent full time staff. We don't use temp staff because they can't offer the quality of service we know our customers expect without considerable training. I absolutely support honest, no holds bared reviewing to keep us all on our toes, but please don't make blanket assumptions that your experience at one or two is going to be indicative of the whole.

After a couple of years of planting small quantities of a large number of veges I now stick to fewer veges and herbs in larger quantities - beans, peas, strawberries, tomatoes and herbs. The best cropper was last year's Purple King climbing beans. About 12 plants produced enough for a couple of adults eating them most nights and giving a heap away to friends and family. This year I planted some beans that a friend saved from last year but they're nowhere near as prolific. The only disappointment with Purple King is that the cool purple colour of the pods turns to green when they're cooked.

I like that these kids relate the human the same as animals
...and inanimate! My 20 month old son treats all alike in his desire to play with stuff ... 'cuddle mummy', 'cuddle pigeon' [real ones - shouting and running in hot pursuit down the beach], 'cuddle helicopter' [at MOTAT, a Xioux]...(cuddle is kind of his shorthand for 'play with me')

We received suprise notice to move from our rental when I was 7 months pregnant (owner moving back in). The advice from the property manager was obviously backdated to avoid the 42 day rule and we ended up with 30 days to find somewhere new and move. To top it all off, my husband was opening a new business in the same month so wasn't available to help with packing or moving. On moving day, the movers arrived late. The driveway at our new place is very narrow with high walls on either side. The moving truck took 45 minutes to get from the gate to the house (only 10 metres distance). My folks were helping out, but after 12 hours of stress (the movers were still there at 8pm - it took them over an hour to get from our old house to the new house, which is at most a 10 minute drive - they stopped off for fish and chips on the way) I just wanted everyone to go home and leave me quietly in the house with my boxes. My folks couldn't leave though because the truck was blocking the drive.

In Wellington last weekend. On the way back to Auckland my hubby couldn't find his wallet. He assumed it was in the suitcase somewhere. Didn't unpack suitcase for a few days (he doesn't use his wallet much!) but assumed it would turn up. Got a call on Wed night from Mt Albert Video Ezy. They'd received a call from Matterhorn to say a customer had left a wallet with one of their cards in it and could they track down the owner. Video Ezy obliged and they passed on to me the Matterhorn phone number and the name of the person looking after the wallet. Matterhorn is posting the wallet to us. Discovered that Video Ezy guy also left a message on our phone Tuesday night when we were out.
Cheers Mt Albert Video Ezy and Matterhorn. Great service. and all before we realised the wallet was even missing.

I caught a cab home from Auckland Airport a couple of weeks ago and the driver asked for my address. I said it was in Pt Chev. He wanted the actual address to put into his GPS. I told him I could tell him how to get there if he needed assistance. He insisted on using his GPS. Go figure. Maybe he suspected I didn't know how to get home?

I followed a car up 10 flights of a central Auckland parking building on the weekend that indicated every left turn (a right turn is the wall). Must have been a visitor to our city.

My own experience of returning to work after starting a family has been very positive (well, as positive as it could be - I would rather have the option of full time caring for my son (or his Dad doing it) but not possible financially...). We are fortunate to have both sets of grandparents in town and falling over themselves to care for my 7 month old son when I'm at work (full time) - he spends four hours with one set of grandparents and four hours with the otherswe are very fortunate in having this support. But also, my employer has been fantastic. My (male) boss is totally flexible with my hours. A private room has been set aside for me to express milk twice during the working day (and I am the only employee doing this from a team of over 100). Most of my colleagues are aware that I am expressing milk for my son and are really supportive of it (and my need to scoot off at sometimes inconvenient times to do it). I recognise that my circumstances are probably not the norm (given what I have read here and in other threads elsewhere), but just wanted to add my experience to the mix.
