  • Hard News: The Mood,

I am much more scared of some of the raving mouth-frothers on "Your Views", than I am of being a victim of crime.

"I can think of nothing better than some low life american style gangster wanna-be getting a good karate kick to the bollocks for his efforts!"
"Shoot twice, once in their head and once in the ceiling and let the cops figure out which one you shot first."
"Only way to cut down on crime, is to beat the living crap out of the perps yourself"
"The next time it happens, I wish I catch the person, take a baseball bat and beat the crap out of him."
"I suggets we enpower the miltary, round up these tattoo covered scumbags and murders and rapists and line them up against a wall and shoot the lot of them."

  • Hard News: Feckless Solutions,

I think free, universal childcare from when a baby is born would be a start.
It would mean that kids get to spend some time a day in a caring environment. It would remove stress and hassle for families who find it hard to get childcare in order to work (or not work). Plus, kids would be monitored, and if any alarm bells ring, the daycare staff can talk to the parents or carers, or contact authorities.
Also, we need a societal change of attitude towards children. they are not our chattels, do do with as we want. We need to lose the "no one's gonna tell me how to raise MY kid" attitude, and remember it takes a village to raise a child.

  • Yellow Peril: Well, you all asked them…,

I remember the good old PEP schemes. I was employed to be an actor and general all-round performer when the Arts Centre in Wgtn was set up in the late 70s, early 80s. There were heaps of talented people there - musicians, artists and performers, many of whom are now cherished kiwi institutions.
That was a brilliant scheme. It actually employed us to create shows, music and art and perform in the community. It sounds hideously hippyish, but it launched lots of people on to their careers.

  • Shortland Street,

<< I can just imagine TV executives saying something like: good script, can you put a Maori in there somewhere?>>

Actually - this happens in children's programming a lot.
Although I remember a kids' show I used to work on, way way back in the early 90s at TV3, which had 3 polynesian or Maori presenters, and the network felt it was "too brown".
