  • Hard News: Why we thought what we thought,

I just read the DHC column in the herald suggesting that Cathy Odgers is lovely (and kind of skating over CO sniggering about someone's potential murder).

    Wow...

Labour or the Greens could also do this.

They could but Labour is supposed to be avoiding attack politics and while I think the way that the Greens have been positioned by the media is unfair, their most likely voting demographic isn't currently retired people (or those who are afraid of their retirement going wrong).

    Winston on the other hand...

If Winston switched from creepy race baiting to people whose retirement has been shattered then I feel like the world would be a slightly better place.

If I was Winston Peters I would start the process of tracking down Hanover investors who lost money they could not afford in their retirement and are willing to be interviewed about how they feel about the current situation.

  • Hard News: Why we thought what we thought, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

I’d like to think no journalist takes anyone at face value – not because they glibly assume everyone lies, but because it’s quite reasonable to assume nobody ever talks to the media without some object in view.

I would argue that there is a difference between taking into account someone's stated ideological views and knowing that someone may be getting paid by an unknown party to push a viewpoint.

I mean seriously, at this point nobody should be able to accept any piece from Slater without asking who is paying him.

If there is one thing that comes out of this that is positive I am hoping that no journalist will take anything that Cameron Slater says at face value.

    This is sickening.

How on earth can anyone justify dealing with him after this?

  • Hard News: Dirty Politics,

The evidence appears to be this:

Which is perfectly horrific if true.

  • Hard News: We can do better than this, in reply to Russell Brown,

    This may not be helping.

Oh I don't know....I found it wonderfully helpful in clarifying exactly the kind of mindset at work here.

One of the things that comes up often in talking about horrendous acts of misogyny is that the perpetrators assume that everyone believes and behaves they way they do, I think what we have here is the political equivalent.

I don't know what the answer is but this can not stand.

  • Hard News: A wretched editorial, in reply to David MacGregor,

It seems an hysterical term applied in New Zealand.

    Seriously?

There are more offensive words to use regarding issues that concern women, but "hysterical" is definitely up there.

  • Hard News: The Digital Natives,

I wonder if this party might not wind up pulling in a few of the less hardcore libertarians?

It's definitely not a world-view that I share but I've always felt they were really underserved in terms of both ACT and national (and obviously the conservatives weren't going to help).

  • Legal Beagle: Think it possible that you…, in reply to bmk,

It hasn’t been done regularly though and Twitter, Facebook make it far easier for individuals rather than organisations to organise. In the past this could have been done too but it took a hell of a lot more work, effort and co-ordination which was why it was typically done by pressure groups rather than individuals.

It was done pretty regularly though, it was done by family first, it was done the society for promotion of community standards and it was done by church groups.

It just didn't make the news because it was the world working in the way it always had.
