  • Hard News: Top of the Populism,

...the private prisons have a perverse incentive to encourage recidivism, because recidivism increases the number of 'clients'.

And if there was a carrot/stick system implemented (e.g.'$5,000 reward for every prisoner who doesn't reoffend within 5 years')by the government that gives contracts out?

Well, whatever happened to the jumbo jets full of refugees fleeting to Hobbiton from the Reich of Chimpy McBushitler four years back?

    Not Hobbiton. Canada.

isn't it funny how Right-wing Americans always want to escape to New Zealand, as if it's some kind of libertarian paradise

I think it's more 'some weird place down where penguins and hobbits live but-the-scenery-is-quite-nice' than anything else.

Overall, nearly two thirds of Americans still reject the theory of evolution.

Probably more accurate to say they reject whatever the hell they think the theory of evolution is.

  • Field Theory: Hey, no gang signs,

...The batsmen are easier to choreograph because they've got a prop. They could ride the bat around like a horse (a la Happy Gilmore)...

Such a painful memory that I have to share it with the rest of you: Anyone remember Jason Gillespie riding his bat when he got a test 50 against us in...oh I dunno, 2005 or 2006? He'd previously promised his teammates that's what he'd do when he got a test 50, and lo and behold...

Re: bowling, I always thought running around with arms outstretched like an airplane was quite funny, while simple at the same time.

  • Up Front: The Missus,

Just a thought - the word 'wife' simply denotes a relationship to someone else, not a role/job. The role is can easily be whatever a couple makes it, though is often subject to tradition, I guess.

  • Field Theory: Contains reference to cricket,

I didn't really enjoy our bowling attack making average batsmen look good - think Haddin in Oz and McGrath that horrible horrible time a few years back. Full credit though.

Hey can somebody explain the chucking thing?

Normally, I'd have thought you bowl an illegal delivery, you get no-balled for it, end of story. Why is chucking considered so bad?

It's not as if he twatted a fielder with the bat.

Matthew Sinclair is, um, a bit fiery sometimes. I await the headline along the lines of 'Sinclair's dummy located in changing rooms'.

There is a big difference between an illegal delivery like a wide (it happens, but should be punished to make sure people don't start doing it on purpose), beamers (same, but so dangerous that you're only allowed to bowl one before being kicked off the park) and CHUCKING. If one chucks a ball, there is a very strong possibility that it was done on purpose - before this little incident I thought it was nigh on impossible to chuck one by accident, but I guess I was wrong! Hope Patel keeps working on the doosra though, would make him extremely handy.

  • Hard News: Birth of the Nasty,

"predicted changes [in climate] for new Zealand would all be good for our agricultural and horticultural industries"

Too lazy to point to data, but the east coast will get drier (not so good), and the west will be wetter (meh). Warm temps good for grass growth/dairy farmers in Taranaki, Waikato, Southland etc though. Probably some issues with pests, as the winters won't necessarily kill annoying bugs any more.

  • Up Front: Knights in White Flannel,

Thanks for the O'Brien heads up LegBreak! Looks like he'll be hanging around the international scene for the next few matches at least, but who would feel that safe with what happened to Mills?!
