"If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself."
Sadly that comparison is rife in schools nowadays. And the rewards, certificates, cups re-enforce the image of "loser." Also promotes the lower willingness to risk failure. "Play it safe rather than explore new directions."

Perhaps John Key should get the job at UN.
He has plenty of experience at saying what his audience wants to hear.
He is very flexible with principles.
Has no problem reversing his previous statements.
He is good buddies with a lot of Leaders.
He has a low golf handicap.
Do I have a seconder? -
Margaret Thatcher gained in power by invading the Falklands.
No doubt Blair believed that he would also gain.

Hard News: The war is still with us, in reply to
"John Campbell interviews British Prime Minister Tony Blair during his visit to New Zealand. Discusses his unrepentant desire to complete what he sees as his obligations in Iraq and his relationship with USA President George Bush. "
Found it but no footage??? -
Two or three years ago John Campbell interviewed Blair who was here on a short visit. Blair's genial grin faded when he was faced with John's direct questions re Iraq. Blair was indignant I think, that some silly colonial should ask him to justify his position.

Red meat gets in via the EU but the Brit producers/farmers resent NZ meat. So will there now be moves to block meat into Britain?

Your description of your position is a valuable insight. Thanks Chelle.

What an intriguing outlook on life has Polly. And the means of expressing it.
Actually every teacher should read her words to perhaps forestall the inevitable drive for conformity. Dunsandel school might be the very place to enable original thought and encourage problem solving skills. Hope so.
My Høstens Vemod is the dread that Polly's clarity and originality might get weighed down and the flames flicker out.
In a classroom some very bright kids stop asking questions. The others don't ask questions, the teachers doesn't encourage the questions, so they all must already know the answers. I must be dumb because I want to know but better not ask. Lie low!

A way back the massive tobacco industry realised that cannabis was a threat. So they organised and paid for "research", the results of which were presented to the American Drug Agency. They decided that the research was sound and declared cannabis to be a banned drug. So now many decades later it is very hard for a Government to backtrack. In the meantime Phillip Morris has had the advantage of little competition.

Polity: Eleventy billion dollars!, in reply to
Tom. Do you live in Denmark or similar? I guess the great place you are living in must have (justly) high taxes. Whereas the thought of raising taxes in NZ terrifies politicians.
