  • Up Front: The C Word,

The number of people I see getting into management then complaining to me about the hours, the stress, the pressure, is something - and enough to make me NOT to want to seek out management positions.

When you have tasted Olive oil and can only seem to grow tomatoes and silver beet in your backyard vegetable garden successfully. You are also now up to year 5 on one income (which was a good one as a D.I.N.K) You have essentially moved as high as you possibly can in you present position. You seriously consider it.

  • Up Front: The C Word,

I was however able to buy a pair of Doc Marten's boots on layby during my apprenticeship. They lasted me for over 10 x year's teaching me an important lesson in buying the best quality you can afford.

  • Up Front: The C Word,

My first job, (I did an apprenticeship in the Navy) was for a salary. I was getting $119.00 p/w after tax in 1987. I have been on wages for the last 15 years. If I want to make any further advancement within the company I work for (into low, low lower middle management) I will need to trade in my wages for a salary once again. I will also need to take an income cut of around 20%. That way, with my families expenses, I can remain disensentivised enough to remain in my position. Which enables my employer to keep the most qualified people in my position and the bottom end management job's for their friend's nephew's.

  • Hard News: Put on the full armour of God,

I prefer to have my images of war with religous overtones in a more 'Commando' style.

    "Gott und himmell"
    "Schnell, schnell"
    "Feur, Englander ratatatatataaaaat!"
    "AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHH!"

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

And as such not worth getting into reasonable hock for.

Sorry, what I am trying to say is that some form of truly free plug and play television broadcast needs to remain a while yet, because some people don't get caught up with sreen size/resolution.

  • Hard News: TiVo and some tunes,

when are they turning analog off? Prime will have to jump eventually

Don't get me wrong, I love gadgets and technology as much as the next person. But to me it is starting to look like watching the old idiot box will soon be a thing of the past for people without a lazy grand kicking around in their pocket and a reasonable degree of computer savvy.
My 3yo daughter will never get to see her Grandad because I will be afraid to take her round because it will take hours to reset the Tivo/Mysky/Internet after he has c$#&^d it up. So we can watch some continually repeated show or crap movie on sky.
No kids will wan't to come round to play with her either to watch our 15 yo 21" tv which is probably as deep as it is wide. use our obsolete PS2. Play on our 5 yo computer ( with 1G broadband plan. Which took me 10 minutes to explain to my cousin in the USA )
Sorry about the rant but as far as I am concerned it is just television. Sounds and pictures. And as such not worth getting into reasonable hock for.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

The cycleway boondoggle was being sold on a basis of the backpacker tourists it would attract.

I dunno, another form of tourism like freedom camping where the tourist spends an absolute minimum during their stay in N.Z. sounds like a fantastic idea.

As for the pokies. At my local Friday watering hole, other locals ( The pokie playing kind) alway's seem to be cashing in large wads of coins. My guess is is that they just pounce on machines vacated by the many losers of the game.
I struggle with the idea of frequenting a public house where everyone else is socialising and they are just staring at a screen. At least at the casino no one is there to socialise.

  • Hard News: Nerd Dad,

Dry your eyes, a re-boot is in the offing!

Eyes are now dry!!! But does waiting twice for them to get it right really improve our chances?

  • Hard News: Nerd Dad,

I know that it is hard to talk about ( Stallone left a bitter taste , ( my vote at the time was with Eastwood ) ) but for me Judge Dredd was 2000AD!!!!! Well that and the ABC warriors, Tharg's future shocks and the Strontium Dog. If it wasn't for Goscinny and Underzo I wouldn't know what a library was. Mustapha Million paved the way for my realisation that there are two sides to the middle eastern debate and no matter how hard I scrunged Faceache had me beat, Billy's boot's were indeed magic, Hotshot Hamish could really kick a ball and Gnasher is in the top three of Dog's names.

Thank's Mum for fronting my monthly subscriptions at the newsagent

  • Island Life: Vendor says sell!,

to not know the full story probably puts you in the sourpuss department.

Yeah, I figured as much. It's just that my initial feelings of jealousy led me to feel progressively grumpier on my way home. It was a potential six packs worth of savings however!
