Newsprint - you am on to it
Obamania - word of the year.
Going forward - this insipid yet repellent (if such a combination exists) phrase plays no part in my plans going forward.
BTW: does anyone else become irascible on hearing the phrase "PC gone mad"? Surely a bigger threat to linguistic freedom comes from the purveyors of management-speak such as "restructuring" and "down-sizing". I'd rather have a "PC-er" replacing "midget" with "little person" than a mendacious CEO talking about "expanding our global franchise".

PS: Some applause, please for the New Zealand U17 women's football team, who have participated in two wonderfully watchable matches in the past week. They lost both, ending any hope of advancing in the tournament,...
We've been to all the North Shore games and it's been brilliant entertainment. The NZ girls have shown skill, courage, fitness and a love of football. I'm glad I could get to the games though. As a football fan/player/coach/father of three playing kids I suppose I might be ever so slightly biased. But isn't the TV3 news coverage of a FIFA World Cup Tournament just a bit, er, crap?

I, also, made a submission on the repealsection59 website. NZ First seem to be split on their voting intentions so I only sent my submission to them. Here's the beginning of my submission as sent to Doug Woolerton among others:
Dear Doug,
I agree with the standard email drafted by repealsection59.org (see below). However, once you've read the first one you'll probably bin the rest so I want to add my own comments....
I then went on to comment in favour of Sue Bradford's Bill. Here's the reply from Woolerton's office.
Dear AdrianThank-you for your email, Mr Woolerton has received a barrage of
negative attention over this bill, and your support is welcomed.Regards
James Mist

james.mist@parliament.govt.nzHere's my question: how much time should I waste contacting Mssrs. Woolerton and Mist to complain.
Actually, don't answer. I already know.
Incidentally, apropos not a lot, I interviewd Sue Bradford on many occasions while working on Big River FM (96.2 and 99.3: Northern Wairoa's local community radio station, the best in the west, etc.). I always found her to be hard-working, polite, passionate, humourous, approachable and (whisper it quietly) honest. She would never try to bullshit her way out of a question and would endeavour to find out more ready for the next interview.
Of course, the papers win whatever. What will the headline be in a few months time? "WOULD LITTLE BOY HAVE DIED IF BRADFORD BILL HAD PASSED" or "PARENTS IN COURT: THE TRUE FACE OF BRADFORD'S BILL".
Time to go. I'm feeling too cynical.

Nice work, Gary. Now could you add up how many hours of "reality" TV we could watch each week? I'd do it myself but I'm too busy putting the finishing touches to my proposal for a new fly-on-the-wall series called.....
...sorry. I just spent 5 minutes trying to think of the most ridiculous, stultifying "reality" show possible but they've already been done for 'real'. Cheers Julie Christie. -
Whilst working as a pall-bearer in the UK last year (I prefer the NZ way with families/friends doing it but I needed the dosh) I was told by the regulars in the top hats that the theme from The Great Escape is a popular choice.
My cheesy choice would be Albatross by Fleetwood Mac: Peter Green would have 'em blubbing.
The WTF choice is The Dogs & The Horses from The Divine Comedy. Over the top, campish, melodramatic and yet somehow moving if you want.
"So the only thing to feel sad about is all the dogs and the horses you'll have to outlive
They'll be with you when you say goodbye"More seriously, a fantastic young man died here recently. The service was packed and the mood was sombre. On came Singing in my Soul by Fly My Pretties. Hundreds of eyes gushed out tears but the way the music lifted everyone at the same time was a sublime experience. To paraphrase Plato, music finds its way into the secret places of the soul.
