Excellent post Russell. This all threatens to play outlike a chapter in Freakonmonics - the 'bad' teachers changing children's test results so they look better.
Coasting does play a huge role, though; I knew a bunch of very bright people who completely failed to adjust to the need to work and to the need to self-monitor, despite wanting to achieve well.
Reminds me of my first year at uni. Living away from home and expected to self govern my time and learning was a complete shock. I failed the two main papers in my degree and had to redo the year. While independent learning was encouraged in 7th form at my high school, I did not feel prepared for what I had to step up into.

Very nice piece for a Friday afternoon. Who knew 'our Lockwood' came up with centrepiece for blame it on the boogie.

I would also like to add my appreciation of you story David. As a physiotherapist working in one of our cities big hospitals it is stories like yours that remind me of the reason I became a physio and why the work I do each day should never be treated as a 'job'.
Its a shame it takes a situation such as the brilliant Mr Knox's to bring such catastrophic health events to the attention of the public but I am also greatful that it provides me with the opportunity to reflect on how my, and other health professionals, can assist in all aspects of recovery.

I agree with Russell's earlier comment re Melbourne, Brisbane etc. We have a beautiful harbour with loads of potential, but a general reluctance to spend any money to make it happen.
I also note, the *special* liftout in the Herald today outlining the development of the Tankfarm. While I might not agree with all that it suggests, I do love the concept of opening up the waterfront with a mix of park and commercial development.
