  • Hard News: Music: Telling Stories,

I can't quite recall the deets but I think HMV ownership is a bit fractured, which is partly why is survives as a brand in JP, and an essential stop at that for visiting tourists, ooops I mean diggers.

And I always enjoy some year end lists! With the reissues, we are in the 'golden' era for quality product as Egon from Now Again has noted several times so one needs to be attuned to whats coming out and available. Happened to be in a shop yesterday where the proprietor was lamenting the fall of the $AUD and having to hold off making orders, which made me think of the reissues I need to grab (Bunny Wailer comps on Dubstore, I see you). Its a cruel habit at times, but here's to more good music and good listening in 2019 !

  • Hard News: About that Rhythm and Vines…,

Australian politics suffers from a disproportionate numbers of loony idiots, and while most come from the right the occassional one - such as Latham - comes from the left. He's been a total fringe character for years, reknown for saying increasinly dumb things in a futile effort for relevancy & some media attention.

  • Hard News: The lost ART,

Interesting, and I can't really recall having heard of this before (but Muldoon did visit my intermediate school as the local MP in the mid 80's). Hindsight is of course a wonderful thing, and the face palm comes quickly when thinking 'why didn't this happen then, it would have been so good today'. Tempering that is my memories of both AKL traffic thru the 90s (mostly deserted roads) and the likes of Newmarket station (a desolate backwater), not to mention the massive decline in the rail network nationally which seems to have occurred over the last 30 or so years. So its tough, and yes today the need for more effective PT is compelling.

On a side note, there are parallels of sorts to Melbourne - an extensive spoke network has been in place for ~100 years, but patronage was highest decades ago after which it declined and declined for years as people opted for the convenience of their cars. Cue rising petrol prices and population growth, and suddenly trains started getting patronage growth and suddenly the lack of ongoing investment is apparent like a pimple on yer nose (i.e the network is still run by a computer system from the 80s). Furthermore, the need for cross suburb connections are stronger now too but oops, the inner and outer circle rail lines were closed decades ago (with corridors mostly sold off, but the capital city bike trail traces the inner circle line), meaning the recent proposal for an outer ring line will cost $50 billion or so ....

Julien is also a mighty prolific record collector, going by his Instagram, and no doubt some of the African records he's been building up over time were an influence for the new album, I still have a massive weakness for the Opensouls Hui Hui which he had a big hand in (composer and drummer perhaps?, don't have my copy of the 45 at hand), and can't understand why it isn't on the playlist at all the major stadiums around the country for big sporting events !! Move over Slice of Heaven ...

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Summer's coming,

Noticed Real Groovy listed some heavy and rare NZ LP's on the Ebay - the cover of the Think LP in particular is super cool, and the Blerta cover is an early press with Renee Geyer's name blacked out

I have a spin cleaner too! Best to do them in batches I find - double sided tape (for sleeve repair), new paper inner sleeves and new plastic outer sleeves all kept at the ready too, along with old rags for cleaning the cover of anything second hand :)

I’ve noticed any attached images seem to go at the start of responses, so the reason I’ve posted the newly framed print above is because its availability was referenced here a year or so ago – thanks Russell, now to find somewhere in my house where my parents won’t dwell on the image and just what Bob is up too. In all seriousness though i like this one as it includes a lot of the early logos from the Wailers initial record store ventures – i.e Wail’n Souls Records. Now to get that Red Bull app …

And an interesting thought about Left Ear records, at least some of their releases are things that they have literally stumbled across in local record shops (and I think the new comp is of this ilk too, noting there was a NZ based collaborator). They’ve recently repressed their reissue of Leong Lau’s album ‘That Rongeng sound’ – Lau is something of a local enigma, also known as the Malaysian Elvis, and his album is also worth checking out.
