  • Hard News: Grade-A lunacy. With your money.,

Until at least late 2007, Te Papa had a proscription on linking to their web pages without permission. (They've since dropped that, and now have quite reasonable T&C.) But seriously: Te Papa? Our Place? I guess it was a sign that someone didn't have a clue.

When I enquired in 2007, Te Papa replied, “We are not aware of any legal obstacles to this approach. It affords us some level of protection against inappropriate linking that could be damaging to our various interests.” A marvellous piece of nonsense.

  • Up Front: Do My Homework For Me,

The Films, Videos, and Publications Classification Act 1993 has a list of practices which automatically make a publication "objectionable”. The usual suspects: torture, kiddie porn, bestiality. But it also includes:

"the use of urine or excrement in association with degrading or dehumanising conduct or sexual conduct”

I think that makes scat or watersports publications/sites illegal, but the practices themselves, unlike everything else on the Objectionable list, are not illegal in NZ. So that's a good test case.
