  • Up Front: Sex with Parrots, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

I'm not saying that I'm personally ready to see the list of forbidden marriages done away with altogether. But it could do with a revisit, and could perhaps allow for exceptions, perhaps via judicial order.

Yeah, at least. For example, a couple in this situation should be allowed to marry.

  • Muse: The Good Word, Bad Numbers and The…, in reply to Lilith __,

perhaps worth giving the correct figure in the body of this post?

If I understand this matter correctly, there is no 'correct' figure as such, in the sense that there isn't an official statistic for the weekly viewers of TVNZ7. (Which itself seems weird to me.) The Minister and the Herald took the monthly cumulative figure and assumed that you could divide it by four to get an approximate weekly figure. The best that we can say is that the weekly figure is probably a lot closer to 800,000 than it is to 200,000.

Happy to be corrected on this - I find the whole 'monthly cum' reporting a bit strange.

  • Muse: The Curmudgeon's Guide To The…, in reply to Matthew Littlewood,

As well as concurring with Craig R’s acclaim for Oldman’s performance ... a brittle, brilliantly controlled and surprisingly sardonic take on Le Carre’s greatest creation–I also thought Brad Pitt deserved all the plaudits that came his way for both Tree of Life and Moneyball.

Yeah. From my non-comprehensive viewing of 2011 films, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was the best overall. Oldman deserved all the acclaim he got and more, as did the screenwriters Bridget O'Connor and Peter Straughan.

Agree with you on Pitt, too. I'm not a big fan of Tree of Life overall, but the performances were very good, except perhaps Penn as the grown-up Jack.

Also, the final scenes of The Tree of Life with Jack on a sandbar embracing his friends and family reminded me of the worst aspects of the ending for another Jack.

  • Muse: The Curmudgeon's Guide To The…, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Sorry to say it, I can’t find movies seriously important.

    Nothing to be sorry about.

    Maybe she doesn’t either….

    I assumed not.

The Oscars are a vaguely interesting example of marketing films to a very specific demographic ie the Academy voters (94% white, 77% male, median age of 62)

Hmm, not unlike the US Congress, then. About 85 percent are male, most of whom are white, and the median age is 60. Representatives and Senators: Trends in

Diaz, really? I don't find her that sexy. Probably doesn't help that she's a poor actress and generally chooses rubbish movies.

But I also liked The Descendants okay. It was probably the best of a mediocre to bad bunch. Not that I have high expectations of the Academy's judgment, but it was a particularly lame selection this year.

  • OnPoint: Dear Labour Caucus, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

Greens, Mana, labour, NZ First and Maori Party? It’s just not political reality in this decade. Numbers 1 & 3 are going to struggle to work together, and 2 & 5 ain’t going to work together this term at least.

One & three? Greens and Labour would struggle to work together? Or did you mean 1 and 4?

Oh interesting. Chrome doesn’t show the protocol string either, but when you copy+paste from the title bar, it magically appears.

As does my Firefox. That's a straight copy and past below, but the http:// isn't in the address bar I copied from.

I rarely agree with Raymond, so I’ll take the opportunity to say I agree with this:

and I wanted to acknowledge that I found Steve's comment really helpful -- a point I'd neglected in my first comment.

Thanks, and welcome to commentating on PAS.
