It was a bit of a surprise to open my favourite blog and encounter something about my workplace. Nice one, Gordon.
To everyone else, there might be other National Library staffers who are reading over these comments. We might not be as responsive to comments as you might hope - there are rules about public servants making media commentary related to their roles (including on blogs, messageboards and even social networks). It's all part of maintaining political neutrality in the public service. But I know I will be paying close attention to any feedback people on PAS might offer even though I can't really engage in discussion.

Speaking of John Oliver, last Monday's segment from the Daily Show is worth a look too.

A pirate walks into a bar, and the barkeep says "Excuse me, cap'n, but did you know that you've got your ship's wheel stuck in your pantaloons?"
"Aye," says the pirate, "that thing be drivin' me nuts! Aaargh!"

I flew into the US yesterday and got to my accommadation in Chicago 2 hours before the first reports of bin Laden's death. Most people at the hostel I'm staying welcome the news of bin Laden's death, but agree that it won't really change anything. It will be an interesting time to be here.

I agree that NZ's destiny lies with becoming a republic, but it will be a headache to get there. Do we just cross out the words "Governor-General" on everything and replace them with the word "President"? Do we directly elect the president? What would be his or her powers? At present technically the G-G appoints the PM and Ministers, what happens if the president wants to pick the cabinet without the advice of the coalition that commands a parliamentary majority? What about the Treaty?
Anyway, I'm far more interested in the Highlanders-Blues game tonight.

I came across this the other day. I hated myself for laughing, but it turns out she was faking it so you can laugh with a clear conscience.
