Hard News: The digital switch-off, in reply to
We are with you on the Captain Mack (though you can get the DVDs via Captain Mack's web site)
The bigger issue here is not my daughter watching 84 hours of TV a week (she doesn't) but that for the times during the day when she did watch TV there was a safe, quality free to air option with a strong local production content.
Now you have to pay to get that. Who does this disadvantage? Obviously children in lower-socio economic households - who have also recently been disadvantaged by the changes to early childhood funding.
What we are seeing across a broad spectrum of Govt funded services is a gradual shift to user pays which will disproportionately disadvantage the poor in NZ.

Yes. We are seeing the destruction of public broadcasting in NZ. We are still trying to explain to our 3 year old why "channel 6" isn't there anymore. We have gone from 84 hours/week of quality free-to-air programming for under fives to just 14 hours.
If you want the 84 hours you now have to pay for Sky.

I was silly and looked at Kiwiblog...I can't understand such bile and hatred at a time like this.

Well over the New Year we put in new garden, moving 2 metres of garden mix from the front to the rear of the house by hand - the joys of old houses and no vehicle access to the rear!
So that meant a desire to stay in town while getting the garden established.
Now to get on the bike for a ride - need to explore Auckland more as Russell does!

The question I have is, what happens to those who have identified him on Twitter?
We may never publicly know his name, but lots know! (When you jump up and down on a car, even if it is your wife's, in Auckland and are a public identity, people recognise you!) This raises the adequacy/relevance of our suppression laws in this digital age of social media.

The issue that most people miss is that none of these documents are likely to be "news" to many foreign governments. As several hundred thousand people had access to the cables you would be taking a big risk in betting no one else has been downloading them and passing them on - for money probably - to another government.

Nice work Russell. Nice on the iPad :)

Well here is my first post from my iPad (just arrived from Canada)
I haven't installed apps yet as I need my credit card details which are at home :(
But that being said, the email (exchange and Mac.com) experience is great!
I am looking forward to leaving my laptop on my desk :) (one at home and one at work) and exploring this "tween" device.
Happy Birthday Russell!

So when do we get a mobile version Russell? :)

Bugger.
I dealt with Paul on and off for close to 20 years. Paul was always someone I enjoyed talking to.
It a great loss for the ICT community and his family.
