  • Hard News: The remarkable rise of…, in reply to Russell Brown,

Trump has handed Avenatti a big ol’ present by going on Fox News and specifically associating himself with the Stormy case. The dumbest thing he could do would be to confirm that Cohen was acting for him on the matter of paying off the porn star. And he did it.

Even the Fox hosts were cringing. Monumentally stupid. But he wasn't saying that Cohen was acting as a lawyer, just that he was working on "the deal" and he went out of his way to say that Cohen was more of a businessman than a lawyer. Avenatti called it "manna from Heaven" and he's not wrong.

I don't think Avenatti lost too much with not being granted intervenor status except dignity. NY is looking at a criminal case and his is only civil. As I understand it, intervenor status would let him see some discovery materials, but I'm not sure on that. He'll have to wait and see that stuff when it gets to open court.

Russell, what's your take on Dershowitz's role as a talking head. On the one hand, he's advising Trump privately, and then he's going around telling news shows what he's told Trump and saying "Cohen will flip on the President". There's a very testy ABC This Week panel from the weekend where I can't work out what he's up to. except maybe promoting his book.

That doesn't explain how the Trump Administration failed to do basic vetting on any nominee to oversee a vast, complex and deeply troubled federal agency

Totally agree. Let me be clear, I wasn't defending Jackson by saying Obama promoted him. I was genuinely asking why on earth Obama promoted him in the face of an adverse report.

The Dems’ memo on Ronny Jackson, the White House doctor Trump wants to head the Veterans’ Administration, is spectacular.

Totally brutal. Why did Obama put him up for promotion if there was a negative IG report?

I've been watching US cable news shows on YouTube over the past few nights and I can't be bothered with the more partisan shows on MSNBC in particular (Lawrence O'Donnell is a windbag and even Maddow strains my patience these days). But they're at least reasonably grounded in observable reality ...

I've grown to like Ari Melber. He's a fascinating interviewer and got Sam Nunberg to blurt some truths he probably regrets (mind you, Nunberg is a hot mess on any given day). I like Maddow's relentless delve for facts, but not her endless repetition of the narrative, just in case we forgot it from 10 seconds ago. Agree on O'Donnell, and actively dislike the Hardball guy.

    The season of the Witch(hunt)
(Trump) ...but you can hunt down those who voted for him…

Are they in season, and is there a bag limit?

For some reason that always makes me think of this one,

It drives me nuts that the nice F&P gas hob we bought a year before we renovated won't work without electricity, it really does.

Um, if the gas comes out, you can light it with a match. You may not be able to use the little piezo-electric starter, but you can still light it. I have an F&P Elba hob I put in when I moved here last year (to the gas-fitter's disgust, I might add - he didn't think much of the brand, but then he was an Aussie so YMMV) and I tested it after I read your comment. Worked fine.
