  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Carol Stewart,

She spoke beautifully, and I couldn't stop thinking: boy, you didn't sign up for this, did you?

  • Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to Andre Alessi,

It's not actually "graphic" in the sense of "blood and guts", by the way, it's the context that makes it disturbing. I don't think it was clear to the photographer what was going to happen while the photo was taken.

Maybe it was. I'll never forget the story of the American photographer who was at Bob Kennedy's side when he was shot, and immediately got his camera out to take pictures - even though he was friends with Kennedy. At that moment he was doing his job, and his job was to take pictures, be our eyes. An editor's job is whether to use those pictures or not, and how sensitively and in what context. But I have no problems with the photographer in this instance.

Those deserve a warning for blubbering potential. Especially number 3.

If it's the Big Picture link, I'm not looking at it again for a while.

Interesting though, if you follow that page regularly as I do, to suddenly see your country in it, and find yourself not only more upset but also more sensitive about the intrusion on privacy and grieving.

It's hard work, but it's paying off.

    Fantastic.

These companies know they have to gradually introduce new designs - give people the option of playing with it, rather than forcing it upon users. But there are always going to be people who find any kind of change to be really upsetting.

That's a tad condescending. Am I allowed to actually genuinely dislike something? Or is any change a good change? For the record I liked some of the Facebook redesigns, disliked others. And added functionalities aside I still like the old PA better than the new one. And no, I'm not "really upset".

  • Hard News: Some time last week, in reply to Russell Brown,

Fair enough. He said they were prepared for the "I hate new Twitter!" messages when they launched it, but were quite surprised to get considerably more "I love new Twitter!" messages.

Yes, they all say that. :-)

To their credit, if you're still on the old one they at least give you a chance to fill out a survey on what it is that you don't like about the new one. Which is more than Facebook ever did.

(By the way I didn't mean to be wholly sarcastic, nothing but respect for actual designers. I happen to think that the new Twitter sucks, however, from a design point of view. Stop getting away from clean lines and simple designs, Internet! If he was going to complicate Google, I'm glad they parted ways.)

Principally, user-interface design, but also colours, branding, etc

What do you mean "but also colours?" Are colours not part of the design? And he didn't even come up with the whale, which favourably shaped perceptions of Twitter! I want this guy's job.

Am I free today? No, it's Tuesday, I've got colours all day.

Yes. And it was a perfectly serious question: what does he do?

Wait: Twitter has a creative director? What does he do?
