Hard News: The Big 2012 US Election PAS Thread, in reply to
I did see a comment yesterday declaring that the Republicans have bungled as many as five Senate races: Akin, Mourdock, can’t recall the others …
Tammy Baldwin in WI: the GOP were certainly hoping for a win here. But looks like Baldwin will be the first openly gay senator :)

Hard News: The Watching World, in reply to
I see fivethirtyeight are now at 92.5% chance of an Obama victory with a “most likely” result of 315.3 Electoral College votes.
The closer to the election, the more the polls (snapshots of an ever-moving present) become snapshots of election day. Plus a small but definite trend towards Obama in the last week-10 days.

Water Thieves.
It’s scary in many ways:- too many eggs in the milk-can basket; degradation of the alluvial water; short-term economic benefits to some, while others ahem, get zip, or less than zip, as the environment is degraded; and when the major droughts arrive, there’ll be enormous pressure to take more water ‘just to tide us over’.
NZ Inc. Let’s let a corporate model take over every aspect of our lives…
ETA, off topic :) Another post from 'the political scientist' examining JK, his character and how our perceptions of it are changing. -
Legal Beagle: MMP Review #1: The Party…, in reply to
A vote for the Maori party a wasted vote. In what way?
The calculation (as you're probably aware :)) is that a party vote for the Maori party is probably 'wasted' because looking at polling and history, the MP are most likely to get too many electorate seats for additional party votes to add any further MP representation.
Won't be wasted if your aim is to make the MP's party vote look better, or you just want to show your support for them... -
Legal Beagle: MMP Review #1: The Party…, in reply to
And they get greatly annoyed at pundits repeatedly telling people that voting for the Maori Party is a wasted vote.
It kind've is, though :)
I'd be happy enough with a 2 or even 2.5 % threshold. 4 is too high. -
Theconversation looks great. Too much reading!
Australia could give us a few heads up in journalism and broadcasting. ABC provides some standards for television. (I bet the radio is good too- but so is RNZ.) There's a robust blogosphere (here too) but also ventures like Crikey, which I don't subscribe to, but if I were in Aussie I would like a shot. -
From the article linked in the story...
after Mr Bailey called the Ministry of Social Development a second time last week, his LinkedIn profile was checked out by Holly Ford – a member of Ms Bennett’s staff.
LinkedIn's default settings mean that if you have a free account, others can see if you've viewed your profile. Mr Bailey saw Ms Ford on his "Who's Viewed Your Profile" list, then alerted Mr Ng.
I half-thought it sounded like a false name, but
Another member of Ms Bennett’s staff confirmed Ms Ford worked in the minister’s office, but said she was not immediately available for comment.
Bennett responds
Ms Bennett told NBR, “I can confirm that one of my advisors Googled Ira Bailey and found his LinkedIn profile, after his name was mentioned in relation to the security issue. This is common practice; social media is a good tool for research." -

Wikipedia reckons Campbell and Hager broke in in 1996; Hager, Havoc and Newsboy in 1999. I never argue with wikipedia. Except sometimes :)
