When I was in Norway, I was told, "You look a lot like us. If ever you're in trouble in this county, remember, half of the people here are our relatives, so just yell out the family war cry (not sure of the spelling, but something like "Roto!") and somebody will figure you're a third cousin they haven't seen in ages and come help you." I made some comment about what their ancestors did to my Scottish and Irish ancestors maybe explaining why I looked so much like them, and they shrugged and said, "Well, yeah".

the proceeds of crime act, (which Labour proposed and National passed when they got in) which does not require conviction on a criminal charge, merely convincing [a judge?/ a jury?] that on the balance of probability, you were doing something naughty,
One of several reasons governments of recent years have given me for thinking we need some kind of constitutional convention or constitutional court made up of people of immense mana and expertise in constitutional law that would be able to send shite like this back to the government with instructions to stop trying to steal our democracy and human rights* away from us. I mean, isn't this not just riding roughshod, but stampeding a herd of wild horses all over "innocent until proven guilty"?
As to how you'd make that work while avoiding US Supreme Court-style nonsense, I don't know. Where's a constitutional lawyer when you need one?
*heh, and I'm in China....

Sigh. There's clearly still plenty of work to be done.
And thanks, everybody, for the fascinating, intelligent, informative discussion.

Capture: Spring Breaks, in reply to
Beaut evening
Hmmm… we seem to be in a very odd time of year when Beijing and Auckland weather are pretty much the same. But I seemed to capture it better reflected in a shop window downstairs…
...than directly through my brother in law's window. Fuzziness in that image is due to dirty windows, not my cellphone, though I should say it's not often you see those mountains that clearly from that distance.
Guess I should add, for pedantry's sake, that those two photos were taken just over the border in Yanjiao in Hebei Province, but I assure you the weather was identical down here too. When we got to the top of the Yuantong Bridge we could see both the Western Hills and, much further away, the Jundushan to the north.

That said, I don’t know what a better approach is…
Well, I don't see how it needs to be a pendulum swinging between extremes. How's about a little balance? Surely we should be able to teach our kids that there are bad people and broken people out there who could do them harm and that they need to make sure they have consent before they have sex, and do all of that without either victim blaming or calling all men rapists?

And then when it's bedtime he has a nice milo, crawls into bed, pulls the blanket up snugly around him, cuddles his teddy bear tightly, and sighs, wishing his mummy were still here to read him a bedtime story.

The Freeview “Chinese” channel is basically CCTV 6, 4 and their news channel feed; with two weeks delay.
Well that is majorly disappointing news. Even if you stick with only CCTV they've got so much more variety on offer. Or is there nobody in NZ who could be interested in keeping up with their favourite CSL or CBA teams, or in watching the myriad forms of Chinese opera, or....
And two weeks delay?! Why bother?

Promising a new Ferrari that is prone to breaking down randomly is not as appealing as a dependable Datsun Sunny for many, no matter how shiny the badge.
Well, on that point at least I agree with him.
As each region has gone digital, there must have been people for whom TV just ceased. What did they do?
Took up bridge? Lawn bowls? It's not like there are no other options, even for the most hardcore luddites.

That’s quite an astonishing story, especially since the flatmates actually called the police.
Yes, and I woulda thunk that her getting up and leaving would've been a fairly clear "no", and the fact he dragged her back inside and locked his flatmates out kinda suggests that maybe she wasn't so willing and that perhaps a largeish amount of force was used.
My jury duty experience was a trial of a guy accused of sexually assaulting a 5 year old girl. The trial was abandoned because of a lack of evidence - the prosecution's expert witness screwed it up by asking leading questions. That was frustrating enough.
