those nasty Labour people who also steal e-mails

Or, according to John Key this morning, listen to e-mails.

I'm such a technophobe, I have no idea how to do that.

The taped comments are clearly code.

Bill calls the voters "punters". Lockwood thinks they're "horses".

Translation: we Nats know our racing, and we're a better bet than Winston. Just make sure the cheques come in under the limit.

  • Hard News: Yr Enemies R Stupid,

This article argues that the Falklands war produced a boost to Conservative popularity of at most three percentage points for a period of only three months.

    Then the article is wrong.

The MORI polls (online) show Conservative support at 34% in March, before the Falklands war (in fact, before anybody had even heard of the Falklands), and rising to 48% in June, when the war ended. That was not due to economic policy. During those three months, economic policy barely made the news. Sorry, but you really *did* have to be there. I've never experienced anything like it.

Moreover, the ensuing election was a multi-party fight under the FPP system. It was not an endorsement of Thatcherism, as economic policy (as opposed to Maggie the Boadicea). But it was a total rejection of Labour.

The 1987 UK election result did show qualified support for Thatcherite economic policies (but again, the electoral system must be taken into account). The 1983 election definitely did not.

  • Hard News: Something odd and unresolved,

The worm was used in 2005. Here's Diana Wichtel's take:

    http://www.listener.co.nz/issue/3407/tvradio/4558/election_watch_tv3s_leaders_debate.html

I think the election is already over

That's not true at all, Kyle. Even if Key is the clear favourite to be PM (and currently he is) that's just the headline horse race. There's a huge difference between, say, a National-ACT majority for legislation, and a hybrid government in which Key presides over policies approved by Winston and/or the Maori Party.

National "won" in 1996. They haven't recovered yet.

    The Onion:

Sherwood was also fearless in his effort to paint the candidate as someone who is "surprisingly down to earth," a phrase that is used a total of 26 times throughout the feature.

    The Herald:

Lawson says they met Key once and found him "very nice, down to earth".

    and

She left impressed with what she believed was his sincerity and down-to-earth approach.

    and so on.

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

'Unauthorised'. That just cracks me up.

Funnily enough, there was a much more entertaining piece on John Key in "The Unauthorised History Of New Zealand", on TV One last night, screened long after everyone had gone to bed and probably seen by nobody outside Jeremy Wells' immediate family, and your correspondent.

This featured archive footage of a younger (but unchanged) John Key personally bringing about the 1987 market crash (well, that seemed to be the gist of it, at that late hour my brain was missing a few tackles). Now, experienced Wells-watchers will know that historical sources and spoof will blend together, so there may have been creative licence here, but anyway - you can see for yourselves, when they get it up "On Demand".

    It's worth a look.

    (end of plug)

  • Hard News: Misconnection,

Of course the Herald's Key story was a puff piece.

Craig, rather than shouting "Satan" and "Nazi" (i.e. rebutting comments which nobody has come anywhere near making), why not just rebut the "hagiography" notion by linking/quoting the critical bits? Out of all those thousands of words, there must be plenty to choose from, surely.

Key said "South Island" when he meant "Canterbury". I think that was the critical bit.
