  • Hard News: Laying Down the Law,

Deborah: you may be assuming they read past the executive summary there.

I was. How silly of me!

  • Hard News: Laying Down the Law,

can we really blame the journalists for reporting what they're fed?

Well, yes! It doesn't take much thought to realise that just 3 people opining on something does not make a trend. We do expect journalists to apply a bit of judgement.

ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulus will greet me. Stephanopoulus is a former aid to Bill Clinton (he was the inspiration for Sam Seaborn),

But is he as good looking as Sam Seaborn?

  • Speaker: Community Modelling with DAS,

Oh, I agree, Che. It's just that I would enjoy the sideline banter too, enormously. I genuinely do like the idea of invited experts posting their thing (c/f doing their thing) with the rest of us watching on, and no doubt commenting vociferously from the sidelines. Wot larks!

As for Laws vs Shadbolt, I would pick Laws every time. He is a stunning debater.

(Disclosure: I was involved in university debating at the more-or-less the same time as Michael Laws.)

  • Speaker: Community Modelling with DAS,

Roping in 'outside' experts for a caged debate does sound like fun. Can we lay bets on the outcome? Who's going to sell the popcorn? And will the loser get the thumbs down, permanently?

  • Speaker: Community Modelling with DAS,

I'm not so keen on it, Che. Just a bit too hierarchical for my taste. And it could well end up with a two tier system, which would have the effect of ghettoising some participants - "Oh, you're not good enough to play with the big kids, but never mind, have your own little sandpit."

  • Random Play: Sing like you’re winning,

I get hit by the reverse snobbery every now and then. I just don't do pop / rock / hip-hop / contemporary music. Not my scene. Sure, if I get taken to a gig, or I end up at one by chance, I usually thoroughly enjoy it, but given my choice, I'll pick the symphony or a string quartet every time. ('Though I do like jazz and blues too.) And if I was choosing between an evening of Kiri and and evening of Hayley, on-stage, not backstage, you understand, I would choose Kiri.

But somehow, I get told that it's a moral failing to not know the name of the latest big thing band. What's with that?

You go enjoy your stuff, I'll go enjoy mine, and that's all there is to it. And if Hayley makes much more money because most people prefer listening to her, then that's just fine too. You go for it, Hayley!

I can honestly say i believe she [Kiri] is the bloated arrogant pompous rude condescending vile cow that you can well imagine she would be.

Heavens, spinner - would you stop beating about the bush! Why don't you say what you really think about her?

  • Speaker: Community Modelling with DAS,

I have gotten into heated discussions occasionally, but usually, it's just not worth it. Sooner or later, you've said your piece, and all you are doing is shouting it all over again - futile. I shrug my shoulders and move on, and do something sensible, like feeding my kids.

I tend to use the female contributors as a bellwether. If the women are uncomfortable, then maybe the situation needs intervention.
