  • Speaker: Are we seeing the end of MSM,…,

Stuff is running a story about the premiums people pay to live within 100m of a beach. Apparently some Queenstowners pay 31.62% more for those sea views. Really?

Sorry Susan Edmunds... but that's a fail.

  • Hard News: The new medical cannabis law…,

    Meh!

While any reform of our drug laws must be considered progress, as drafted, this bill is unlikely to improve the situation for more than a handful of people, if any.

The vast majority of medical users choose to use cannabis for pain relief, as a natural and effective alternative to addictive opioids. Restricting access to those in palliative care with less than 12 months to live adds a cruel twist to the government's 'medical cannabis within 100 days' promise. It feels like the government has cheated.

While there is mention of patients being able to access their medicine through pharmacies, the lack of any corresponding right to grow restricts them to expensive imported product. So nothing's really changed there.

The law continues to criminalise green fairies. We're told that the Police will be able to use their discretion when they choose who to prosecute. Excuse me, but haven't we been there before?

I understand that this issue is politically sensitive, especially when it requires cooperation from NZ First. Chloe's bill is hovering in the background and I'd like to share others' optimism that this represents a small step towards more sensible drug laws. But I'm not holding my breath.

  • Hard News: Barclay and arrogance,

The arrogant Barclay is back in Queenstown. That'll finally give the cops a chance to interview him over those charges which we must remember carry a penalty of more than two years in jail. I'm sure he'll be doing the right thing and fronting up to the QT Police station shortly.

Hmmm... Millbrook... jobs for the boys. Those Nats sure do look after their own. Even the criminals amongst them, eh Judith.

  • Hard News: Memories of the news, in reply to Euan Mason,

Sputnik. My Dad took me outside to look at it, then JFK's assassination.

Snap, Euan. I can clearly remember my Dad pointing to the little light traversing the sky and telling me that there was a dog inside the capsule. Then the shock my Mum and grandmother exhibited the day JFK was killed.

It's no wonder I went on to become a news junkie.

If, like me, you’ve used up your month’s free access to The Washington Post...

If you believe that you own any cookies which reside on your computer, there is an easy solution. I've sent you an email Ian. ;-)

  • Hard News: Barclay and arrogance,

Todd Barclay has got away with it again. By turning it into a he said/she said situation? Or maybe by offering a reasonable alibi? Nope. By simply refusing to talk to the cops. Again.

Police have now closed the case as they have insufficient evidence. No warrants were executed and Barclay again refused to be interviewed.

Can other criminals use that tactic to avoid prosecution or do you have to be a National Party MP?

  • Hard News: Media Take: The Panama Papers,

Another offshore provider of "services" for the super-rich has been hacked. Bermuda-based Appleby has admitted their servers were hacked last year but decided to keep shtum... until journos from the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists began asking some rather awkward questions.

Stand by for another round of crooks being exposed. I wonder how many New Zealanders are involved this time?

  • Hard News: Media Take: The Future,

I’m sorry to see the show departing. Throughout the years, 7/3/T has provided a much needed perspective on the NZ media, and a few other things besides. And I’ll credit Media Take for introducing me to other areas of Maori Television. Thanks team!

I’m delighted to see Rachel Stewart is on tonight’s show. Her gamekeeper turned poacher role always provides a refreshing antidote to DairyNZ’s sustained PR nonsense.

Maybe the revamped RNZ will provide a home for the next iteration of the show? It would seem to be a natural fit from where I’m sitting.

  • Hard News: All Change, in reply to ,

    That’s not good...

Have a read of the Drug Foundation's policy proposal Steven. I'd like to believe some of that thinking will inform our future drug laws.

Damn, but I love this new wind of optimism that's blowing through our little country.
