  • Hard News: Excited for Auckland!,

A great debate. Obviously I have no say in what should happen in Auckland but there is a ripple effect in what happens there. I wonder, for instance, at the wisdom behind the billions being spent on the Waikato Expressway, which will really only enable us to encounter the Auckland congestion five minutes earlier. We need daily rail services between Hamilton and Auckland Central but our two do-nothing local Nat MPs have steadfastly opposed any talk of it.

  • Hard News: There in half the time:…,

Great story, Russell. I have had a go on a Mercury bike and got up to 29km around Hamilton Lake. I just wish they were less expensive--for that kind of money, you would want the rider to be weather-proofed.

In the meantime, until I can afford an upgrade, I will stick to my little Makita electric bike which I won in a Placemakers charity auction last year. The wheels are too small to get up much speed and the batteries power a journey of only 30-40km, but it is fun to toodle around at the beach or around town. It also folds in half and can be bunged in the boot.

However, you do have to sometimes cope with the looks of disdain and slurs from passing teenagers!

  • Hard News: The Dr G giveaway,

I agree. The ticket prices suggest they are flying Bob G out to NZ on a private jet but he is doing three talks in Oz and it would cost bugger-all to fly him across the Tasman. I recently had an 'exchange' with the Australian-based Think Inc whose is behind this venture, about the inflated prices they were charging to listen to Steve Wozniak in Auckland and they did not provide a convicing case.
It is probably wiser and cheaper to buy a couple of Bob's books from a good bookshop (sorry, Russell!)

  • Hard News: The Dr G giveaway,

Is this the same weekend as the Big Screen Symposium in Auckland (Sept 24-25)? I wonder if I can do both.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: The Cinema of Loss,

Yes, very sad news about Stephen. Rosalind is my niece.

Aggrieved that I forgot that the Nick Cave film was on in Auckland last night, when I was in town for the AUT book launch of Reimagining Journalism. Just hope it plays again, somewhere.

  • Hard News: On the Clark candidacy, in reply to andin,

I agree with Andin. Matthew is floating a bunch of half-baked assumptions about Helen Clark's life. She was born and nurtured in a farming family in Te Pahu, in a very rural corner of the Waikato.
