  • Hard News: Another entry in the Public…,

Glad to hear you're up and about and more functional. Tramadol is great stuff - Janis had it after the neurosurgery - but beware! When you stop taking it you can have a night where you simply don't sleep. It's probably dosage/duration related but you simply don't have any need/ability to nod off.

So, less tea and ice cream binge fests for you.

    Cheers

    Paul

  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

    Couple of points:

@rich of observation not sure you're right about iPhones being double locked. If you buy one from Vodafone you can put ANY SIM card in it and it'll work. You'll need to change settings but that's it.

@Sam M - can't be arsed is a bit harsh. The tech guys are working hard to make visual voicemail work. The problem we've got (and we're not alone) is that Apple's preferred standard for voicemail is completely different to every telco's standard model. We're still waiting for VF HQ to provide the fix. I see it's gone in to Australia so hopefully that's an indication that we'll get it soon here.

@Belt - you say Vodafone only offers 2100MHz in the 3 main centres. This isn't quite right - we cover 70% of the population with 2100MHz 3G. That's the 19 main towns and cities and frankly I'm hard pressed to name any beyond those 19.

There's a belief doing the rounds that 850MHz is somehow technically superior to 900MHz. This is on a par with suggesting that 99FM is somehow superior to 95BFM. I'll leave the readers to decide for themselves.

    Cheers

  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

    Vodafone does not lock handsets.

Also, before anyone asks, Vodafone doesn't have an exclusive deal with Apple for the iPhone and we've never claimed to have one. We're the only seller in NZ, but it's not exclusive.

    Cheers

  • Cracker: In Which DC Becomes a Twat,

@jack (sorry), currently there is no way to TXT your tweets for free but I can say that a certain large telco is in talks with Twitter about providing functionality in the near future.

Not that I can say anything formal at this point.

Other than what I have... oh, blast. I heart 140 characters. So little room to get into trouble.

and if real time isn't your thing, how about this photo:

which is why Twitter works summed up in a frame.

but you can chat with the real Stephen Fry... or the real Neil Gaiman... or the real, well just about any of them really.

Twitter is (I'll try not to overstate it too much) one of the best new tools for journalists available today. Up there with mobile phones, an ability to remember details while drunk and an expense account.

    Have a look at:

    http://www.journalism.co.uk/7/articles/531439.php

    for some examples.

I'm constantly surprised by what I can learn from reading Twitter and by how quickly what I write gets passed around.

But that's only one part of it. Take the bush fire example - it's not that the initial news around the number of dead was wrong, it's that you can use Twitter to give you real time updates on where the fire is right now, as it turns.

But hey, it's not for everyone. Believe me, I didn't want to get involved in the first place but having been dragged into it I can see its value both as a support mechanism and as an information dissemination channel, one that operates far faster than any other medium around today.

And given its growth rate, I'd say there's plenty of interest in getting information now rather than in fifteen minutes (or an hour, or six hours, or not at all).

  • Cracker: In Which DC Becomes a Twat,

But I'm a news junkie! I want it now! I don't want to wait to know, I want to be the guy people say "how'd you know this stuff before everyone else?".

I love it. More, sooner, faster. Now now now.

You TV journo types... it's all about "we'll get to it when we're good and ready". It's not news if someone else has already told me.

And this Just To Hand (via Twitter, of course): TVNZ cracks down on social media use at work:

    http://www.throng.co.nz/tvnz/tvnz-blocks-staff-use-facebook

How does one enlinken links on this here blog...

    quote:
"As part of TVNZ’s response to the recession, restrictions are now being put on access to some social websites. Provision of bandwidth is an increasing cost to the company and high volume usage on social networking websites impacts on our bandwidth availability for core business activities i.e. the consumer experience on tvnz.co.nz and ondemand. The restrictions will be active from Wednesday March 18th and will apply between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. Outside of these hours, please use your judgement on appropriate personal use.

The websites that will be blocked are: Facebook, Bebo, Ebay, Zillion, Trademe, Gumtree."
