If we all operated in UTC, I'd have to get used to which hours constiture morning, afternoon, evening and night everywhere I went.
Universal time will not be without its own quirks it's true.

So from now on I get at up at 21:00 UTC and work until 7:00 and call 1 in the morning "midday"? All so a bunch of people can teleconference internationally without having to make complex mathemtical calculations such as "what's 18 minus 12"?
It will be particularly useful when a fraction of the population live in space stations or moon bases or other places where there aren't timezones.
Seriously though, there are any number of things that need to be synchronised around the world, and cutting out the translation into and out of universal time will cut down the chance of error.

Great satellite photos on Google Maps though.

Try the Chatham Islands. They're 45 mins ahead of mainland NZ, which makes watching the news there a little weird.
I have long been an advocate of abandoning time-zones and just running the world with a universal time.
It won't solve the problem of people in different parts of the globe not knowing at what time the sun shines here though. But it will make it easier to schedule international calls.

Me standing at breakfast bar, trying to get something done while keeping one eye on kids playing with water in the backyard (and one ear on the cricket commentary).
Y'know, I would consider myself lucky to get as much feedback or instructions from my clients, even if it was as crazy.

West Indies seem to be playing Vettori out (he's 10-0 off six overs) and might be trying to win the game off the other 40 overs. Which is brave.
35 off his last four overs.
It was a fine innings by the Windies, but pretty random. I don't know if they applied much strategy to it.
However we don't really want Gayle to be in 10 overs from now (he's got 79 of 124 runs so far). That would be bad.
134 of 243 when he got out. Bad, but a fantastic bad.

On a related point, it's been very interesting to see the Australian cricketing public really get behind the RSA side.
I have a suspicion (based solely on reading Australian cricket blogs) that the Aussie public are becoming just a little sick of their team. I suppose after a decade or so of being unbeatable, anyone's interest would start to fray. But I think it really started during last year's home series against India, when an ugly, arrogant side to Ponting's side was revealed. So when South Africa showed up and started winning by playing good cricket and not making a fuss about it, a few losses could be quite satisfying.

Big congratulations to Marty Guptill. For non-cricket-enthusiasts, the upshot is that his ODI debut performance was the second-best ever.
It was great wasn't it.
I've been despairing recently about no one really stepping up and demanding to be selected, particularly openers. And now in the matter of a month we've had both McIntosh and Guptill show off their stuff.
