gak. do some of you more established PASers realise how had it can be for a newbie here to get a look in on this place?
Sometimes it feels like the only option is shock or... "nah..."

The appropriately named 'Your Telecom' service from Telecom has been offline for a week.

Danielle: "I'm hoping it didn't include Songs From The Album That Three People Bought"
Well, that's you and I. But who on earth brought the third copy of Lament for the Numb?
That trio of albums Dobbyn did in the 90s; The taut, dark, edgy pop of Lament, the controlled chaos and whimsy ofTwist and then the beauty and beautiful release of The Islander; superb stuff. Will surely go down in history as his finest work (even if, for the most part, the crowd-popping hits came from both before and after that period).
I recall hearing an anecdote that Mr Dobbyn once responded someone who kept calling for "Bliss" with a "thanks for reminding us both how old we are" retort.

philipmatthews mentioned the Bailter Space gig at Vic Uni, that was "so loud that a big chunk of the audience couldn't stand being in the hall and listened from out in the stairwell."
I was there for that one, and loved it! I propped myself against the stage and let the sheer volume rip through my body; the noise becoming physical sensation and vice versa. One of my favourite live music experiences, ever.
Of course, now at age 35, my hearing is getting worse and worse. All those years in small rooms with loud instruments, either playing in or watching bands at places like Bodega and the James Cab.
I don't remember anyone talking about ear plugs back then, I only remember them appearing regularly towards the end of the nineties. Wish I'd used them when I was a teenager, I really do.

Wonder how the Arts Foundation peeps feel about the use of their laurete prize money to buy back and pulp this novel? Sure, maybe Ihimaera isn't using their money per se, but that's how it looks from this vantage point.

or, once could say, it kicked him right in the Bollards.

Danielle: not stupid, just cowed. And, no, I ain't buying it. Fiction writers have long found ways to acknowledge and use others ideas in their writing; a very common device is extended quotes opening chapters. But, do I feel that it'll be insesnsitive for us to suggest that Witi Ihimaera might have to follow such traditional methods of attribution? Or, maybe, cowed in awe of such literary genius. In awe of such a national treasure?
Well, I don't, but maybe he does.

Really? I'd describe my reaction as appallingly gleeful.

And in a country like New Zealand where we wear quite a lot of black, does the donning of a colourful sports uniform* allow the Kiwi bloke to put on a colourful shirt without feeling... weird.
Yup, I'm pretty sure that is a factor, and not just in New Zealand.
Except in Wellington, of course, where we want even our rugby team to wear black, thank you very much, and that time they went to the gold jerseys shall be forgotten about and never mentioned ever again, thank you.
