  • The best the Net can be,

Bloody true. I've never had - and still don't - a cell phone. Went looking for a pay phone recently, and there weren't any.

  • The best the Net can be,

If it needs to be said, one thing that seems blindingly obvious from this discussion and others recently, is that the best of the web is social.

Yes, and, as you mention in your later comment, those who only know the internet era will never understand the kind of social and informational isolation that many of us experienced in the pre-internet era (which sounds kind of maudlin, but I only mean it literally).

Indeed, even those who did experience that era would struggle to remember all the ways that life was so different (having to travel intercity - well, North Shore to AK - to find one little line in what appeared to be the only copy of a book that existed in the region; having interests or hobbies that were shared by literally no one you had ever spoken to; and - for the vast majority of us - only being able to communicate with more than one person at a time if those people were physically present).

  • Random Play: Dog Day's Afternoons,

how will we know if it is any good?

Tape it, then play it back at half speed.

    Alternatively, ask an asthmatic.

  • Hard News: Music's emerging digital market,

it came in at over 2,000kbps! Who knew that was even possible?

TV gear utilises a sample rate of 48kHz instead of the 44.1kHz standard of CDs etc. I'm no expert, but the bit depth is probably 24 instead of 16; between the two, that would account for the near doubling of the data rate.

  • Radiation: Lost on Internet Island,

You're not wrong, Philip. What they need to do is intensive workshopping of contestants during the season. That way they might actually improve each week.

As for Cowell, yes, it'll be rubbish without him.

  • Radiation: Lost on Internet Island,

Actually, I just checked the listings, and the final is on Thursday, only half a day after the US. Good effort, TVNZ.

Final in the US was on Monday our time - their Sunday - I think. I banned some of my facebook friends from mentioning it. So far so good.

Our final is on Saturday evening. 9.30 - midnight.

You're talking about Lost. I was talking about... um... another show.

  • Hard News: Still not all that Super?,

You guys are nuts and need to stop it right away. And quite frankly, the European Commission and lots of left leaning governments are also enthusiastic about running local services through corporate models. This doesn't mean they are freaking Fascists.

I hope you don't mean me, but I suppose you do. I twice spelled out that life under John Key is not fascism. One can say that a mouse slightly resembles an elephant in some respects without claiming that they are the same thing, you know.

Not a very good protest chant is it.

Nope, but then reality is rarely encapsulated by a slogan. That's one of Progressives' biggest problems, really; always having to argue, "It's complicated.".
