Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli, in reply to
What did you expect? I imagine the Ranapia standard would require a paragraph on A10 saying “It has been reported on the internet that a public office-holder has been indiscreet but modesty forbids this paper sullying its pages further.”
Well, snark away all you like Stephen but I don't apologize for expecting slightly higher editorial standards from a major metropolitan newspaper than I do from WhaleOil and The Standard. But, OK... I guess The Judd standard where editors don't actually edit and outsource their news gathering to the more fetid corners of the internet is the new normal and I'm just pissing in the wind hoping for different.
But if this is The New Normal, I really would like the supposedly "legitimate" press to own their bullshit. You don't get to go sewer spelunking then feign outrage at the nasty smells and unpleasant sights. Or at the very least, don't try and do it simultaneously. Is that too much to ask as well?

even had one NZH journalist seriously try to convince me they were “forced” to publish Whaleoil’s claims
To be fair, I also have to note the same person said, strictly off the record, that there’s *cough* considerable internal unease about how this story’s been handled, but don’t hold your breath waiting for anyone to say so publicly. Not in this economy. And certainly not with the treatment dished out to Jock Anderson for going off-script fresh in everyone’s mind.
Suspect Albert Street isn't the only media workplace that has similar stories-behind-the-story to tell, but who's going to tell them? John Drinnan? Mediawatch - because, let's face it, Radio New Zealand isn't exactly spotless.

It was unnecessary for Rudman to imply that Whaleoil’s behaviour is his father’s responsibility – it clearly is not – but I don’t think it’s at all unfair to consider John Slater’s role as the manager of a campaign that is starting to look like it was knee-deep in this whole business.
Yeah, funny how Rudman’s written two columns without any mention of his own paper’s role in this whole business. Or tomorrow, are we going to get a five page exclusive where Shayne Currie reveals his traumatic hostage experience as he was forced by the evil right wing conspiracy to run this story for day after endless day?
Yeah, I know I'm started to sound like a stuck MP3, but I'm just sick of the way the media act like they're passive bystanders -- even had one NZH journalist seriously try to convince me they were "forced" to publish Whaleoil's claims -- rather than active participants. It's a self-serving abdication of any editorial responsibility, and I just don't understand why the media are allowed to get away with it over and over again.

John Slater was the campaign manager. If a campaign activist was planning to drop this bomb he ought to have known. Any activist ought to have felt that doing this solo would be the end of their activism. Cameron also should have known that doing this as a black op would be an appalling thing.
Which, miracle of miracles!, is a point you’ve actually made without being an utterly foul douchebag. Well done. And I think it’s perfectly fair comment to ask whether Rudman’s going to grow a spine and turn that “brutal” invective on his own employers. I’m far from impressed by the sight of The Herald’s “Auckland issues” columnist posturing atop a moral high horse choking in its own shit.
Then again, I really shouldn’t be surprised because it’s hardly the first time The Herald has pulled a bait-and-switch dsitraction from it’s own active participation in gutter politics. Transparency and accountability are for everyone else, it seems. Again.
But I just find it amusingly ironic at so many levels that a right-wing middle aged, middle class male is using these buzzwords to try and shutdown criticism of another similar person and his similarly opinioned but not related son.
OK, Rich. How about some good old Anglo-Saxon? Fuck off back under your bridge, because troll season is over.

So, if I find one of the more florid street people that inhabit this city and set them up with an office and internet server to express their unusual ideas, and bail them out of any litigation that arises, then I haven’t got any responsibility for their outpourings?
A more immediate thing you could take responsibility for is being way too cute with the passive-aggressive digs at Cameron Slater on your way to doubling down on the cheap shot at his father. I know they’re not exactly a difficult target hereabouts, but it would be really nice if you’d run a privilege check on why you find "florid street people" such a witty put-down and give it a rest.

Given that no-one’s slammed Brown for his hypocritical grandstanding over the depravity of street sex workers engaging in survival sex while engaging in extramarital nooky with a younger woman himself
In the context of the pretty blatant (and casually racist & ageist) slut-shaming of that "younger woman", that could have been put better Namesake.

Oh, and I'm going to regret getting into this with you again, Tom. But I thought this was a pretty shitty crack from Rudman:
This week, after the Len Brown scandal erupted forth from his son Cameron's blog, Mr Slater confessed to the Herald that his very own, hand-made Frankenstein had not bothered to consult him beforehand about it, or the ongoing dirty tricks campaign to try to bring Mayor Len Brown to his knees.
Hand-made Frankenstein? You know, Rudders, if the New Zealand Herald wants to get Bizarro Old Testament and play "the sins of the children are visited on their parents", its a game more than few media people are playing with boomerangs. Still, second column in three days that (I'm sure entirely coincidentally) doesn't even touch on the feckless editorial mendacity of Brian Rudman's own paymasters. Guess he's not going to get Jock Anderson-ed any time soon...

2. Never fuck anyone demonstrably madder than yourself.
Phil, you’re never going to know who grateful I am a certain someone I’ve been sharing quarters with for 18 years didn’t get that memo.
And a general usage note: If PAS is supposed to be a safe space for everyone, how about thinking really hard what you’re saying, and who you’re saying it to, with the mental health-shaming?
I see Cameron Slater is now threatening threatening Brian Rudman in the comments section of Rudman’s piece on John Slater
The only thing Brian Rudman should be threatened with is a compulsory refresher course in Basic Non-Tabloid Journalism, along with Shayne Currie, Bernard Orsman and everyone else spineless enough to take this slime batch.

When has NZ seen a sex scandal as nuanced and dramatic as this?
William Lanarch, anyone? The persistent rumours his third wife was carrying on with her step-son was the least of a hot mess of money, politics, sharp practices, a private life of near Gothic proportions, and a rather messy end in Parliament Buildings...
