  • Hard News: Meet the New Bob,

Meanwhile, the protest organiser reportedly spent $50,000 to get 2,000 people. And the right calls people a "rent-a-mob"?

Idiot, WTF are you going on about? I guess my thirty pieces of silver are still in the mail...

  • Hard News: Meet the New Bob,

But given that this is effectively a remix of the conservative Christian lobby that played a significant behind-the-scenes role in the last election campaign, I suspect I'm not alone in desiring a little more transparency. Who are these people? How much money do they have? Where's it from? And what discussions have they had with established political parties?

Actually, Russell, I'd be quite keen to see that level of scepticism applied to all the impressive sounding rent-a-quotes who seem to be a substitute for actual reporting and analysis. Then again, I guess a little sceptical analysis of the lobbying activities of former politicians and journalists would run a little too close to the bone... What really creeps me out is that Family First is relatively transparent, at least compared to organisations like ChenPalmer.

  • Radiation: Desperate Heroes,

On that basis, is it okay if I continue to objectify the Tui girls?

Feel free - is it just me, or are those ads getting more and more surreal?

I get that Labour are really pissed with the Exclusive Bretheren, but maybe the solution might have been to make it an offense not to put your name to any material you distribute.

And I'm sure Mr Edgeler - our resident legal Brainiac could correct me if I'm wrong - but wasn't there a question about one of those items not being correctly authorised, but the people concerned appeared to get off the hook because the Police didn't really think it was cricket to prosecute anyone...

    Emma:

And if you're worried about exploitation shouldn't you also be worried about five-storey high billboards of men in their underwear?

Aww... shut up woman! It's the barest sliver of recompense for six thousand years of patriarchal heterosexism! Well that's my excuse for drooling over the ripped but retarded men in ads for Jockey shorts, Tim-Tams and Diet Coke? And I'm sticking to it.

If you really want to bring a feminist analysis to the table, I wonder what kind of 'assertion' or 'strength' is on display when its in a frame where every man is a fricking moron?

  • Speaker: Family First, Blowjob Later,

Money isn't freedom of speech. What they're protesting about is the ability to distribute their 'freedom of speech' and making it available to a wider audience.

It feels a bit demeaning to people who are struggling against regimes that actually do restrict your freedom of speech.

So, perhaps we should STFU with this thread because, you know, it's kinda demeaning to folks who live under conditions of real state media censorship...

Oh and it looks like the Sociology department of Auckland University has joined the self promotion camp.

And if you're talking about the letter in yesterday's Herald from a Professor Peter Davis... Well, I guess it's worth noting the irony that neither Professor Davis nor the Herald felt the need to clarify whether this gentleman happens to be related by marriage to the leader of the parliamentary Labour Party...

And right on cue: Bob and Christine turn up on the TV news, together fighting fascism (sic).

Sigh... I really wish someone would put a hundred dollar tax on using 'fascist' in public... But what's you point, Simon? I was on that march, and you may think the issue is trivial or non-existent but please spare me the guilt-by-association nonsense. I've little time for the Sensible Sentencing Trust or Family First, but I don't ask their permission to walk down the street and am quite happy to pay them the same courtesy.

  • Speaker: Family First, Blowjob Later,

It is kind of strange how the people who shout the loudest about 'family values' always seem to end up in court on kiddie-fiddly charges.

Eww... not quite what I was thinking of, and while I think Krosky The Klown is an idiot who should be allowed to talk his brand of excrement around impressionable children, I'd draw the line at any inference he's a kiddie-fiddler.

When it comes to 'family values', mine include:
    1) Set appropriate and rational boundaries, and stick to them. (i.e. Little Rodders is not going to be up at 2130 on a school night, let alone watching anything with a title like Californication.)

    2) When it comes to parents and the media, be a engaged and informed one.

One thing I find rather strange about Family First is that its pretty damn libertarian when it comes to beating the shit out of your children. But they're awfully gung ho about organs of state censorship. Unless they're putting R ratings on Mel Gibson's sado-masochistic essays in Jesus snuff...

    3) Unless you've received professional advice to the contrary, your child is not psychotic - and probably a damn sight more insightful and open to discussion that you give them credit for.

We've been watching the Dresden Files on Saturn. At least, my other half has been, whereas the wooden over-acting and general lameness have made me flee the room.

It's not good enough to be engaging, but doesn't reach the depths of unaware crapulosity that makes a show a 'guilty pleasure' must see. Charmed was my last real g.p. must-see, but Supernatural is achingly close. Any traces of even latent intelligence or talent are fatal to GPTV.

  • Hard News: Fake Fiona Rae,

we have received disturbing news that the Human Rights Commission has written to the select committee considering the Electoral Finance Bill welcoming the extent to which the committee has moved to address its concerns about the bill. It seems prudent to assume that the HRC has returned to its former status as a dangerously PC tool of Helengrad. Do not, repeat, do not trust the HRC until further notice. And that march we organised is a bit of a worry.

I get the real deal transmitted to my fillings, so get thee behind me DisInfoRove!

Still nice to see we haven't fooled IdiotSavant:

But these flaws were widely pointed out, even by the bills' supporters, and so were highly likely to be changed. And now that they have been, the EFB's opponents will have to come clean about the fact that they're not really defending democracy or freedom of expression, but rather the "right" of the rich to try and buy themselves power.

Really, why bother? Still, it's a wonderful time-saving device having Family First and No Right Turn to tell one what one really thinks...
