    Horse:

Never thought I'd say this and mean it, but I'd rather err on the side of generosity where the 'graciousness' of the ABs are concerned. And I don't think it's unduly catty to say there have been, shall we say, one or two occasions where the ABs haven't been shy when it comes to sledging the opposition or bitching the ref.

Anyway, whatever their motives, the ABs are well down the line when the chill pills are eventually handed out.

  • Aussie comedy dissing Polynesians?,

With a new series of Bro'Town kicking off this week, perhaps we shouldn't be wagging our fingers at Chris Lilley too energetically. :) Anyway, anyone who remembers We Can Be Heroes: Finding The Australian of the Year may come to the conclusion that Lilley spends considerably more time and energy "picking on" fatuous, self-absorbed and really rather stupid white Aussies.

Is that how the Aussies see us?

If you actually take your average rabid talkback host or tabloid paper with anything other than a grain of salt and a whole bottle of tequila, you bet your arse they do. I don't think some folks have ever gotten it through their heads that Centrelink doesn't actually dish out benefits to Kiwis and Islanders while they're in line at customs.

For gods sakes would somebody please put that boring, tired, grumpy old has been out to pasture.

Yeah, but that's just Murray Deaker being Murray Deaker - which is Item #1,899,075 in my 'Grant Me The Serenity To Accept What I Cannot Change' File. Could someone please tell me when the grown-ups are back in charge of National Radio, because even there the line between post mortem and necrophilia is looking mighty thin.

But I'm really struggling to recall a situation where such an inexperienced referee has been sent to control such an important game

As opposed to all those other ratshit games that didn't matter at all, because the All Blacks weren't involved? Not picking a fight, RB, but I don't think anyone came to the World Cup to fuck around, do you?

Oh and also slightly off topic, but am I the only person who was shocked to see tears in Dan Carter's eyes when he came off?

No - then again, I've never really been moved by Dan Carter's eyes. They're certainly not his primary profit center.

  • Speaker: Quantum Competition,

Let's agree to disagree, I know where you're coming from and 'spect vice vera.

Quoted for 110-proof truthiness, Paul. :) Meanwhile, I'm just a little more depressed by this. Let's just say it's a rare day I'm on the same page as both the Sensible Sentencing Trust and Women's Refuge, but WTF! Your mileage may vary, but perhaps that was a little more worthy of a black-bordered Herald front page this morning than... guess what.

Oh, and may I nominate Anton Oliver for Dork of the Day for this OTT military metaphor:

Anton Oliver reckoned the All Blacks' dressing room had the same stench of death as a World War 1 battlefield. The veteran hooker has developed a passion for New Zealand's war history and read The Massacre at Passchendaele and All Quiet on the Western Front during the past few weeks in France.

The images from those two books were an apt description for how the All Blacks felt as they sat, devastated, in their dressing room, Oliver said.

"The feeling in the shed is like no-man's land as it's described in those two books. There's a sort of desolate decay and the smell of death.

"That's what it feels like to us. It feels like no-man's land and it's not a nice place to be."

OMG... you did not just go there, girlfriend! Howlingly vulgar at the best of times, but the timing was rather unfortunate, don't you think?

  • Speaker: Quantum Competition,

    Paul:

Disappointment is part of the human condition, so - it appears - is an wretched lack of proportion. Sorry, but I'm (perhaps disproportionately) narked off at hearing nonsense like we're all in a state of national mourning and losing a football game is any kind of 'national disaster'. Even on the level of headline hyperbole, that's so far over the top (IMO) its distasteful.

And, hard as this may be to believe, my hackles go up when I hear people chipping at refs. Its a bloody thankless task, and while it's easy to second guess someone from the comfort of a bar stool (and the benefit of endless video) the poor bugger had to make a call, in that moment from exactly where he was standing.

  • Speaker: Quantum Competition,

I'm surprised he didn't blame the Lesbian Cabal.

Hayden: Dykeocracy Central have found out that softball, horse riding and women's golf are much more successful at 'recruiting' normal girls into the lesbotic lifestyle. Murray really need to keep his copy of the homosexual agenda up to date.

  • Speaker: Quantum Competition,

WTF has the last election got to do with it?

I take my politics as seriously as some people take rugby and put an enormous amount of time and effort into campaigning last time around. Really awful 'losing' by a little over two points, but sadly that's the way it turned out and just got over it. Some folks didn't, but must admit anyone who puts the words 'stolen' and 'election' next to each other lose my attention.

I think you're jumping at shadows.

And I think denial is a truly awesome thing.

  • Speaker: Quantum Competition,

Which is excellent stuff in theory, especially if you didn't watch or care about the game.

Now, Russell - I don't particularly "care about the game", and am perfectly well aware that lots of people do. But I'd respectfully suggest that nobody thinks basic good sportsmanship is a matter of 'theory' when a ref being assaulted by an unhinged spectator-parent, or some game degenerating into a brawl hits the papers. Nor do I think it's anything to sniff at when clubs and rugby as a whole actually decide they're not going to tolerate 'thug-by' bullshit either on or off the field.

Now, I don't want to over-extend that, because we (mercifully) don't have the kind of hooligan culture that making British football fans about as welcome in Europe as shaved ham in a kosher deli. But I really do have to agree with some of the commentators above: The hysterical military analogies and sooking from the likes of Murray Deaker would be funny if it wasn't so damn creepy.

Enthusiasm is a very good thing, but like most virtues, it can turn into a vice pretty quickly.
