  • Hard News: That's Entertainment!, in reply to recordari,

Didn't hear much about this year's BDO appearance.

I was distinctly underwhelmed, but it was pleasant enough.

  • Hard News: That's Entertainment!, in reply to Jeremy Andrew,

At my stage of life, hair to whip and a neck that will support a decent 'edbangin' session are the stuff of memories.

Now, where did I leave my zimmer frame...

Edit: I was entrained enough to wave my bald spot back and forth to the second one of those tunes. Oh, the horror.

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Christopher Dempsey,

Otherwise as a beast, how could it survive?

One lives in hope that if constrained within a strong regulatory framework, it might revert to offering better moustraps.

That A.Skillz remix of California Soul really is irresistable. My toes suffered inadvertent involuntary entrainment. I may even have bobbed my head.

  • Southerly: Tower Insurance Have Some Bad…, in reply to Thomas Johnson,

surely the government cannot take on an obligation to put every single resident/owner/business into the same situation as pre-quake. That would be ruinous.

What you are effectively suggesting is that if both the government and the insurance companies are either not obliged, or not prepared, to pay out, then the property-owning residents of Chch can sink or swim on their own.

To me, that by itself is unacceptable. Your opinion may differ.

We can then add into the mix that the government (as de facto owner) will onsell the land for development. Still acceptable?

  • Muse: Commonplace Book,

Would like to think it was equal rights and privileges for women but apparently only women need apply.

Weeeell, it becomes a bit more difficult when you take into account that women are the only ones biologically capable of giving birth, and all the downstream consequences of that.

So perhaps giving them equal pay for equal work and letting them come and play in the boardroom with the boys is a good start, but it's a bit more complicated than that?

  • Hard News: What the kids do, in reply to webweaver,

Being surrounded by thousands of people celebrating madly when you're not feeling the same way can be the loneliest experience in the world.

Oh, is this the way they say The Future's meant to feel?
Or just twenty thousand people dancing in a field?

  • Hard News: Perception and reality in the…, in reply to Richard Aston,

oh yes everyone seems to forget they will come out one day

Yeah, this. I really can't see why it isn't a no-brainer. Do we want functioning humans involved as part of society, or highly-damaged individuals with a huge grudge against The Man, and little to lose?

Erwin James's two books make interesting reading on this point. He was, to put it mildly, not a very pleasant person when he went in for a 14-year stretch. It ook him a long time - ten years or so - of that sentence, before he was even able to start the process of personal rehabilitation - to put himself in the right mental space to build something useful.

  • Hard News: What the kids do,

My dreadlocks tend to have teens relax around me and quite comfortable to chat about drugs.

If one is a straight-looking adult, and one wants to score drugs, it can also help to have a dodgy-looking dreadlocked mate along as a wingman to smooth the path.

    Erm, so I've heard.....

  • Hard News: What the kids do, in reply to Lyndon Hood,

I've seen it done with coffee as well, which almost has a built-in suitable terminology: 'anyone got any [filter] papers?', 'I've been ripped off - this is decaff', etc, etc.
