Ian Mackay, of course you are entitled to disagree with me, but be assured, I do *not* have an audience/reader in mind when I write.
Not even a notional reader, which might even just be yourself in a reading rather than writing mode? (Apologies if you've already made this clear, but I'm curious, both personally and as someone who reviews occasionally, just as a coda to other's writing processes :)).

Sorry, make that New North Road. It's not easy, good social commentary.

You mean like the liquor store attached to the Gull station in New North Rd?
Oh snap. I bought beer from there once, but felt guilty enough that I went to Glengarry in Kingsland ever after.
Once the new liquor shop on Great North Road opens - and it's a Planet Liquor, whatever that is - I'll probably slouch down that way instead, and biff empty Woodstocks at people waiting for the train on my way home. Phoreal.

Wasn't yesterday's weather glorious?
I left work last night, and planned out an epic cycle from town to the favoured supermarket to get barbeque things. Just past Red Baron Motorcycles on Great North Road I started to hear that loud rhythmic hissing that told me I'd just gotten a snakebite puncture on the rear tyre.
It took me a good half-hour to walk home, but it was so bright and sunny and gorgeous that I didn't regret it in the slightest. It's nice to live in a city where you get days so good that a breakdown becomes an unexpected plus.
Anyway, I got the nail out of the tyre, got to work fine this morning, and am planning an evening around Pollen Island by kayak to round off the week. Ace.

Simon Grigg, as is his way, has blogged his current trip home to Auckland.
As ever, he sees things we don't.
That's an awesome post.

They've just built two small new buildings near the rail station at Morningside. One is a tiny little liquor outlet which will be opening soon. I can only wait and see what the results will be.
The other building, for what it's worth, is occupied by a brand new office of Housing New Zealand. I have no idea why.

smirk at sam f's comment. ya cheeky fuck.
A smirk was all it deserved... just poking the borax. Will stand back now and enjoy lurking the rest of the thread :)

where's Rob?
You need to say his name thrice, whilst standing in a pentagram arranged from pirated NZ music CDs.

Sounds fascinating. I'd happily devour more of your mother's travel stories, should you feel inclined to share more, and I'm pretty sure I'm not alone...

@Steven - something like this? I suspect this is a charcoal burner that doesn't actually power the vehicle itself, but still.
Wood gas was of course the big replacement fuel in Europe when petrol was scarce during the war - any period film set at the time will likely include a truck or car with a wood gas unit strapped on top or behind the cab.
