Those people work so hard for their kids.
Indeed - but since you and David C. are far too modest to do it yourselves, I'll pat you both on the backs too. You're both freelance writers - a precarious lifestyle choice at the best of times - and you've both put enormous time, energy and effort into making sure "their issues were being aired in such a forum" that could have been spent on, well, more lucrative work.

Oh -- so you like the manboys now?
Harumph... my nads are not the throne of higher brain function, Russell.

Now that was a funeral (well, wake anyway).
Masterful understatement - I laughed, I cried, I hyperventilated all over the living room floor and marvelled at the way Van's brain exists in a parallel universe from the rest of us (then cried some more)... What more do you need? That bitch better get her skanky paws off my Munt, though. :)

Hold on tight, Craig. That election's still a way out so it's going to get even worse...
You do know how to cheer a boy up, don't you Stephen? :) I just don't know how much deja vu all over again I can handle - wring hands, polish your carefully calibrated soundbites, pass a stupid law that has less substance than your average press release, rinse hands of any consequences when nothing changes, repeat... over and over and over again.

The one I've seen -- was it a piliot? -- was good; as good as Torchwood but not as good as the Doctor.
Not really - the <i>Sarah Jane Adventures</i> was in the fortunate position of, (as Russell Davis himself so eloquently puts it) "[being] commissioned before we'd written the script. If we'd written a load of rubbish, they'd still have had to make it." It was just a case of there being a New Years slot open, and RTD grabbing it with both hands.
The SJA looks like its going to be a lot of fun, but like Torchwood is squarely aimed at a different audience than Who (which itself is a rather peculiar case of broad cross-generational appeal) and needs to be seen as such.
But how can you guys trash Billie Piper like that? You're being evil!
Feh... I don't like admitting I was wrong, but I'm all for over the hill, tabloid staple pop tarts displaying hitherto unsuspected talents. Gives me hope that the human race isn't irredeemably screwed. :)

I actually considered adding that caveat... but then decided that people might well complain even if they didn't watch it.
Um, you're talking about the episode where misogynistic self-loathing alkie arsehole Tommy rapes his castrating, money-grubbing whore ex-wife for reasons I long since stopped caring about? Meh... anyone masochistic enough to sit up and watch Rescue Me deserves all the nausea they get.

Paul:
Cheers, I just wanted to make sure I was engaging with the argument you were actually making, And, sure, you have a point - I just don't think its one you couldn't have made with equal force before teh interweb came along to kill our brainz. :) At the risk of sounding like an insensitive bastard, was there any real news value beyond the blanket coverage of the Minnesota bridge collapse beyond "if it bleeds it leads - and if we've got enough entertainingly ghastly pix it leads all week"?
I wonder if the real problem is a 24/7 news cycle. Not so long ago, you skimmed a morning newspaper over breakfast, watched the (only) TV news bulletin at six o'clock, and (perhaps) caught the headlines on radio before you went to bed. Just because there's more space to fill - and more competition in the media marketplace - doesn't necessarily mean there's more going on in the world. :)

Oh well... here's something else for the feckless mob to move on to:
Prime Minister Helen Clark says dangerous dogs give her the "creeps" and she is personally in favour of tougher dog laws.
There have been calls for tighter dog control after two-year-old Aotea Coxon was savaged by a dog in a Christchurch park on Sunday, requiring 290 stitches and a plate inserted in a broken jaw.
Miss Clark said she was "repulsed" by the attack.
"It gives you the creeps to think of dangerous dogs strolling around ready to pounce on innocent people. That is why I am more than happy to keep looking at how the law can be improved and how enforcement can be improved," Miss Clark said.
Anyone else seeing a pattern here?

which begs the question: why do publishers think I want to read it on one more than any of the others?
I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, Paul. If, for the sake of argument, I was the editor of the New Zealand Herald I wouldn't assume that my readership consists of online news junkies. Or am I missing your point?

Well, we'll be there. And I'm sure someone will be delighted to get their hands on Andrew's nuts.
And pay dearly for the privilege... I'm sure there's a word for that.
