  • Up Front: That's Inappropriate!,

Came across a little girl called 'Diamante' the other day. So, not even semi-precious?

Just noticed you said it was based on an incidence at Ikea. Surely for that, there is extra added pathos. Or even bathos.

Act I is my favourite. I think I know that chorus...

Well worth the wait - thank you!

  • Busytown: Front, man,

Argh. I have just read a letter in the DomPost online, where basically the author is saying we shouldn't be offended by Paul Henry asking that the Governor General should look like a Kiwi, because we all know kiwis look a certain way - not like Sir Anand. I feel dirty for having read it. I can't argue with these people, it just makes me feel tainted.

For the record, as a kiwi living in NZ, I can detect another kiwi accent at about 50 paces, and I don't much regard what the person looks like before (usually figuratively) throwing myself at them and screaming 'Hail fellow kiwi, I am so homesick, speak New Zealand at me!' in a slightly deranged fashion. The last person (looking quite bewildered) had been living in London for 8 years and was quite surprised that his accent was so still so clear. He LOOKED like his parents or grandparents might be Chinese, but I knew he was a kiwi like me, and so he turned out to be.

  • Busytown: The shakes,

Three hours ago, I was just about to hit “publish” on a frivolous blog post when

It has been fantastic reading about the quake, how everyone is getting on, and I hope we will keep seeing regular updates - it has been really helpful to me to add to what my Chch based family and friends can tell me. But am I alone in also wanting to see the above frivolous post?

  • Hard News: Ideology for Evidence,

Oh, and I may have missed it, but nobody yet seems to have mentioned the impact this may have on attracting talent (both immigrant and expat) to the country - what can happen to someone coming to NZ, and then finding themselves without job and income, and possibly dependent on these for even their right to remain?

  • Hard News: Ideology for Evidence,

I have worked in the UK with a 90 day probationary period, but my understanding is that it was never able to be used by the employer to summarily dismiss an employee without reason or explanation. I'm sure it has been exploited by employers to rid themselves of employees they are fairly sure will never have the resources to fight the dismissal, but in theory there are checks and restraints on their powers to dismiss.

I have been out of NZ for a few years now, but can someone explain to me - if an employee is really completely rubbish, demonstrably so, and has been formally warned about their crapness (no, I know that isn't a real word), can they not be fired legitimately? Really, I'm curious.

  • Speaker: Every Four Years,

I lived round the corner from Upton Park and the Boleyn for one memorable season...West Ham now rumoured to be negotiating for post-Olympic use of the new stadium. Wonder how things will change round Green Street if they do move - will be a huge change in the feel of the place if they do go.

  • Up Front: Absence of Malice,

Ashburton Coll '84-88 - and definitely wagging. If your father was brought in Wales, like mine, it was 'mitching'. God knows.

Rachel Prosser - Dr Jim was a special case - I remember a Classics class with him spent watching the film 'Top Secret' as it was a classic example of Aristophenian humour. And you're right - you would have been so caught! ;)

I wagged a couple of times, but some of that was technical - hiding out in 7th form common room, or 'studying' in the library. Or in the music suite 'practicing'.
