I'm having fun finding bands that don't appear on Wikipedia's list of kiwi bands. In fact, the list doesn't seem to include hundreds of major kiwi bands. Like Peking Man. Or Love's Ugly Children. Or the Hallelujah Picassos. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bands_from_New_Zealand

I just remembered... I saw INXS at the Logan Campbell Centre on 11 January 1986. The sound sucked.

I think we saw Rolf Harris at school once. He probably felt that Christmas had arrived early.
My parents dragged us along to see Patsy Rigger and Suzanne Prentice at the Tomarata Hall when I was 10. Luckily this experience didn't put me off music forever,
The Aotea Square riots was the first concert I went to by myself. It was fun! DD Smash were so amazing! It was a riot!
I think my first concert by an international band was Dire Straits at Mt Smart, 1 March 1986. I might have caught some Aussie bands like Hoodoo Gurus or Hunters and Collectors at the Galaxy before then though...
And the October 1986 Shriekback gig was 6 months too late. Great concert though! -
Trocadero magazine circa-1987/1988 was like ChaCha's little sister.

Hard News: Political Idol, or whatever…, in reply to
I think they did a great job of not reversing the Richardson benefit cuts and continuing rogernomics under Helen Clark, so an apology for the 80's doesn't really cut it. They have been National in drag for a long time from where I'm sitting.

It was nice to hear a Labour politician telling us that they understand that there is growing inequality in NZ (not just inequity), that our youth are being left with no options other than to leave the country, that socialism isn't a swear word and they intend to change course to even things out.
At present Russell Norman is growing in favour as a result of Labour completely ignoring any concerns about the free market, globalisation, financial dependence on foreigners etc. The interesting thing about the fishing debate was most kiwis ignorance about the dumping of a third of all commercially-caught fish as by-catch. A situation that Labour under the Shane Jones' of the world were quite happy to continue with but the Greens would never sanction. Can you believe that the Maori are still allowed to employ Koreans to catch their fish instead of employing Maori youth for multiple years to come? Cunliffe seems to have drawn a mark in the sand at least. Shame it's taken thirty years to reach this point where Labour may represent the working classes again rather than the upper-middle-classes who seem to have been their primary focus over that time. -
My worry is that if neither Labour or National hold a majority after the election and the Greens win 20% or more and hold the balance of power that the Right wing Labour faction of Robertson et al will push for a coalition with National to set us back on the centre-right path of Helen Clark. The main laws we need changing to counter the inter-generational theft that has occurred for the past three decades are policies proposed almost solely by the Greens and adopted by Labour only at the last minute when they have no choice. It may look easier for Labour's ruling clique to join National instead of taking an honest look at the situation we are in. Patsy's to the USA and international money-lenders, desperately selling our property to foreign non-residents so that over-65's can take overseas holidays and continue working while paying themselves $16500 each a year regardless of how much money they have in the bank. That is why it is so important to them that the foreigners can keep us safely under surveillance and under control. Just don't get me started on the leaky homes crisis or self-regulation of the dairy industry btw...

I liked his reasoning which still stands even though (obviously) many of his facts were wrong. CK Stead's 'Smith's Dream' was written in the Muldoon era but the situation it describes seems much more likely today than it did then in my opinion.

Hard News: The GCSB Bill: We at least…, in reply to
I saw a Facebook post from Marijuana campaigner Billy McKee saying he had attended a protest outside Peter Dunne's home. Megaphones etc. That's pressure and it takes this whole debate further past petition stage for many. I bet Dunne's wife was not amused though and in reality it is not her fault that I and many others would love to persuade her husband not sell us out. Collateral damage beltway-style perhaps? It's a big step to protest en masse outside an MP's house.

We designed and created Foodbox's stand and I was glad how the kid's creche idea worked. The Lion stand was great. A pick and mix of 6 beers with a max of 3 of each including Leffe Brun AND Hoegaarden. Slurp slurp! I enjoyed chowing down on an amazing range of stuff and meeting fun foodies. The deal bags were flying out the door and most reported a super busy show.
