  • Field Theory: Fight Club, in reply to Biobbs,

I cannot understand why they want to make this expensive decision now, when whatever money is available should be going to help people who’ve lost their homes.

Yeah. I'm fairly agnostic on whether we end up with one-way or not (and I use it a LOT so I'll end up having a strong opinion) but as a priority, at that price, when we haven't really any idea what our inner city will look like- or indeed, if and when we'll have on at all? Gawd help us.

  • Hard News: Belief Media, in reply to Carol Stewart,

One year of Sky City’s shiny new pokies could, for example, easily pay for TVNZ 7’s annual budget.

Good point! You should be in parliament :)

    Genuine Quakers rock
    I’ve never met a non-genuine one.

Richard Nixon perhaps? Not someone the Quakers are fond of owning :)
ETA: the ‘strict’ Quakerism described is something I’ve never experienced. In my long-ago experience, it’s a remarkably liberal church. The only thing it seemed Quakers strictly adhered to was pacifism.

  • Hard News: Belief Media, in reply to Lilith __,

many of the people who complain that Dawkins is offensive seem very free with their insults when describing him.

If you think he’s wrong, fine, but is the personal abuse helpful? Would it be more constructive to say why you disagree with him, or what your own position is?

+1 Goes right back to the two sorts of respect. Hard to tease them apart, but that's no excuse :)

the Southern Psychedelic Moment: 1981-86, on Flying Nun. The least obvious F Nun compilation in years -- perhaps ever

Yeah, and here's one that didn't make it onto any record that I know about- but a ripper at the time: the McGoohans' "Pyschedelic Texas"

I wonder how much of my own tolerance of religious belief comes from the negligible part it has played in my life.

    Ditto.

The reasonable conclusion is is biology is not efficient and Occam was wrong.

I didn't realise Occam was a biologist :) Occam's razor is about explanations.

The principle is often summarized as "other things being equal, a simpler explanation is better than a more complex one." In practice, the application of the principle often shifts the burden of proof in a discussion. The razor asserts that one should proceed to simpler theories until simplicity can be traded for greater explanatory power. The simplest available theory need not be most accurate.

    Not biological systems...

Always good to move on with the benefit of Hindsight :)
Shame about TVNZ 7 all round- we're just getting used to it and it's about to go: so much cool stuff. Great to hear you've got other projects-
