  • Hard News: The sphere of influence, in reply to Matthew Poole,

In the same way that Grant Robertson following the correct course of action and asking the Minister of Police about his police-officer-cum-Olympic-athlete child’s options for getting additional leave was unrelated. But nice job by the media in trying to baffle us with the false equivalence.

Coff, Ross Robertson, unless Grant's been hiding some new skills...

Almost feel sorry for the bugger.

That way, the Dark Side lies.

  • Hard News: The sphere of influence,

The most disturbing thing (aside from naming Bradford in a lie) that I took from the 3News Collins clip is the not-even-veiled threat to the Press Gallery, which I took as "If I go down, I'm taking you all with me".

The origin of the term "loose cannon" comes from sailing days when cannon were secured in place with heavy rope to absorb the recoil when fired. If the rope broke, recoil would send the cannon flying to the rear where it would take out crew, cannon and even put a hole in the side of the ship. I think Collins' rope has well and truly broken. It must be sending real fear though the Key cabinet.

We need to fund parties from the state or this sort of bought influence will only get worse

They'll still do it. They'll just hide it better.

Joyce is able and disciplined, but seriously lacking in charm. I've seen him alienate an entire audience in the course of a speech.

    Commies to start with obviously.

I've watched him alienate tories as well. He is completely graceless with large groups, but can be surprisingly charming with small groups and in one-on-ones. Maybe it's a fear of public speaking thing. One person who knows him said to me "he's the guy at the party that you want to talk to" and didn't mean a political party.

On the subject of music though, here’s a refreshing take on an old tune:

Point taken about IFPI figures. But they'd have to be a long way out to really falsify what he's saying.

IFPI's figures are a long way out and always have been. They don't exist to accurately report on the music industry but to justify introduction of "protective" regulation.

The words “tu quoque”, “pot”, “kettle” and “black” immediately came to mind.

    I prefer "J'accuse!"

Whatever the merits, it's a real level up that David Parker managed to coherently articulate a policy from Labour that merits more than a eye-roll. But it's also incumbent on everyone else to remember public policy is more than a game of poll points.

    Yes to both points, Craig.
