  • OnPoint: The Big Guns: Truecrypt and Tails, in reply to Martin Lindberg,

    http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/</q>

I heard they were hacked and that message may be bogus.

If not, the source code is available, so I imagine others will take up development and patching.

Apart from any suspicion of closed source crypto, the built in encryption on Windows/OSX is awkward to use and doesn't have the hidden volume feature.

  • Hard News: The Digital Natives, in reply to Stephen Judd,

Three of the top four potential IP/Mana candidates haven't been MPs for a while (or ever) and Hone prefers to campaign outside the house, so that would be a plus for them.

  • Hard News: The Digital Natives, in reply to Andrew Geddis,

Why should Dotcom and Mana have divergent agendas? There seems to be an assumption that they do, because of their very different backgrounds, but has any indication come from Dotcom that he's got a bunch of hideously reactionary policies he's going to enact just as soon as he finally achieves unfettered power?

One might think that Dotcom would want "business friendly" policies, but such policies aren't really needed by a company like Mega. He doesn't have any need to employ cheap labour, he should still be able to make a lot of money* under a fair tax system and I don't think he needs to desecrate any pristine wilderness.

In many ways, a straight-up business is better off with a leftist government. You haven't got to compete with other businesses in tax avoidance, or to spend money and time persuading politicians to channel the pork your way.

    * Assuming it's actually possible to make any money at all, long term, from a business based on buying expensive disk and bandwidth and giving it away below cost. Ahem.

They could have had that Al Gore*

Non-NZ citizenship notwithstanding. Why do we have these silly restrictions?

  • Hard News: The Fine Line,

Maybe there should be a minimum salary for work visa applicants (such visas are normally to do a particular job for one employer). That would ensure that workers are genuinely skilled (in order to attract that salary) and are not being imported just to save money on employing an NZ resident.

In Germany, these guys just got a Euro-MP elected.

Their leader justifies his populist policies thus:

In politics nowadays sentiments that bring in votes are the ones that get expressed and that's what I intend to do. Better that we get those votes than some sort of neo-Nazis.

I'm assuming the underground tunnel linking Washington and Waihopai must have been closed for maintenance.

You have to maintain a digital archive, as in having more than one copy on a hard disk or other online medium and validating constantly that those copies are still readable. When (not if) they fail, you replace / upgrade the broken hard disk and carry on.

If for some reason a digital repository was powered down for a long time (as in decades), then you'd have problems bringing it back up and reading any data. So if society was wiped out by global nuclear war, survivors wouldn't we able to access a lot of early 21st century information, even when they'd recovered to the point of being able to make electricity again.

  • Hard News: Circumstance and coincidence,

The first aircraft I flew on (aged 3 months) was a Bristol Freighter of British Air Ferries - they operated an aerial car ferry service across the Channel. Apparently it was very loud and drowned out any baby noises.
