Hard News: The perils of political confidence, in reply to
From merc’s link:
John Key,
If you went to New Zealanders and said, ‘would you like to borrow another $7 billion in the world’s markets where debt is a major issue, and that’s what has dragged down Italy, and Greece, and Ireland, and Portugal and Spain, or would you like to build no new infrastructure at all for the next five years and pretend we’re going to be a growth economy, or would you like to have the Air New Zealand model operating in a few more companies’ I think you’d get a different answer.
In other words, if you ask a loaded enough question, you might get the answer you want.
He then goes on to avoid the question about what National would do if there was another economic crisis, and they've already sold almost half the asset shares.

Hard News: A week being a long time in politics, in reply to
I used to consider Farrar a valuable commentator. But recently I’m less impressed. Maybe it’s the nearness of the election. He seems to be getting a bit petty sometimes, and his analysis on this tea pot tape issue is way off base.

No that’s okay, I thought it probably wasn’t.

Anyway, I’ve managed to hear most of that scoop interview with Roy Morgan CEO Michele Levine. Basically, she’s saying it will be next week before polls really feature any potential impact of the tea tapes issues. -

As Russell has said rhetorically to Paul Holmes, “What is your fucking point?”,
Is that question directed at me?
-
And apparently the CEO of Roy Morgan says it is too early for “teapot tapes” to have had an effect on their latest poll, according to this interview at scoop.
I can’t get the darn thing to play all the way though – can anyone tell me what she says says about the poll in relation to the tea pot matters?

And a complete mess of an opinion column from Paul Holmes
Prediction: He’ll write another mess next week.

I’d note Andrew Geddis (that nototious Tory lick-spittle) is not assuming Bradley Ambrose will get the declaratory judgement that he wants – and which, I think it’s fair to say, many here assume is a no-brainer.
I don’t think that many would say it’s a legal no-brainer. Most reasonable people, regardless of left or right leaning politics, seem to accept that the legal position is uncertain.
I suspect many here agree with me that ethically the situation is not really comparable to the NotW-style phone hacking. Not anywhere near.
During a political stunt in a public place with invited media around, their conversation got recorded, inadvertently or not. That conversation was between two high-profile politicians talking about politics, not about their personal lives. What they discussed is relevant to the New Zealand public and could change how some people vote. All things considered, it would be unethical not to release the tape.

Hard News: Criminalising Journalism, in reply to
And yet there were “microphones pressed against the glass” next to the leaders hoping to pick something up. They could see them yet did nothing about stopping it, and if one of those had gotten a recording it would clearly have been intentional. The claim of privacy is effectively destroyed, methinks
Richard, I don't know if you saw it, but Campbell Live had a segment on this issue (as I said on another thread). It was more than even just cameras against the glass; at least one cameraman positioned himself where there was no window between him and the two politicians. I think he was a bit further away and I don't if he even attempted to record audio, but conceivably he could have, and he wasn't asked to move.
It's clearly not a situation that should be considered 'private' in the sense we usually mean it. Certainly not in the sense that it could reasonably be compared to bugging someone's phone.

[Once again, I haven’t yet caught up with the comments yet.]
The nuclear response began on Sunday with that psychotically aggressive press statement by Steven Joyce.
Another indication of Joyce being overly aggressive is his statement as if it’s fact that the taping was illegal. People with expertise are saying it is actually a tricky call.
Also, why does he refer to himself in the third person in an article under his byline? Looks goofy.
