The entirely predictable Listener editorial: "Hager, of course, is no less guilty than Slater of trying to exert influence on the political process."

Hard for the reader to asses the credibility of the claim without knowing who that source is, or what evidence they have, but two sources is a pretty common policy.

A source who prefixes their story with "apparently" is not a source.

Oh yeah, it's super lazy from the media to run a story on Curwen's say-so alone - I'm quite surprised it made it that far.

He himself said "So, apparently..."! To treat him like a primary source is simply insane.

So we're back to to the scenario of a Prime Minister who is innocent of any and all doings in his own office, even where they involve the Security Intelligence Service, an extremely sensitive agency for which he is directly responsible.

In light of the fact that Key had been busy calling at the time Goff on this very thing, Brent Edwards - using one of the most wonderful euphemisms in the history of public radio - just called this revelation "surprising".

Crikey. Goff didn’t mince his words on Firstline this morning:

This is a man who knows he is not going to have to apologise for that remark.

And, honestly, I can't really muster much sympathy for Nicky Hager -- who I find it hard to believe is so naive he didn't see all this coming.

How's he to blame? He's not the hacker. If he hadn't written the book, do you suppose the hacker wouldn't have released the material?

But here's the dirty little secret of newspaper opinion columns. Tendentious, partisan arguments generate more traffic via comments than finely-worked theses and sparkling prose.

This is why I'm hoping people will be more liberal in their use of donotlink.com and screen captures on social media.

  • Hard News: We can do better than this,

I know I keep banging on about the Canons. Like Russell, I don't have a stake in them taking the award away from Slater (and I certainly wouldn't want it thrust upon me), but then I also think that the industry body is duty-bound to finally distance itself form Slater. It's a symbolic gesture, yes, but symbolism is important in these things.

In that spirit, here's something I really regret not asking Rick Neville when he emailed me last week: when was it that he decided to include the best blog award in the show? And when were the criteria set, and why, given the odd choice of rewarding a single story (submissions still asked for four pieces)? Because my strong suspicion is that they created the category in order to give the award to Slater.

Anyway, I suggested a reporter who's been in touch to ask and they got an out of office reply. He's back on September 9. A most well-timed holiday.

Honestly Pete could you just get out your own head for half a minute and think about what you're saying?

You're talking to the guy who claimed that my urging Radio Live sponsors to donate to Rape Prevention Education was a form of sexual assault.

Of course his party was not exactly a bastion against anti-semitism

    That's OurNZ, not YourNZ, though.
