Maybe gay marriage will encourage the Americans to illegalise discrimination at the state level, but with the bleating about “state rights” already, I’m not holding my breath.
The ruling makes it a lot harder for states to get away with that, though. That's why it's A Good Thing, in general.

I'm pretty good at interviews too, but I hate all the corporate drivelspeak and have no idea what purpose it serves. And all the welcome venting here makes me wonder: who are the people who buy this stuff and take it seriously? Are we all perpetrating, as the ancient slang goes? What if we all just... stopped?

I remember reading quite a lot about late term abortions after George Tiller was murdered. The vast, vast majority of women who want to have abortions then will be having them for medical reasons, though, because in our hypothetical scenario they'll all be free to have them for non-medical reasons in the first half of the pregnancy with no hoop-jumping. So if the foetus has some dreadful abnormality like its brain growing outside its skull or whatever, then there won't *be* this moral quandary for the medical staff. Who, among doctors and nurses who *already perform abortions*, would refuse under "moral grounds" to perform a late-term abortion then? No one.
I dunno, it's just weird to go on about this one predictably rare hypothetical. Maybe by the time we get our dream abortion law the procedure can be outsourced to a robot or something!

Well, in the USA Dr Tiller carried out late term abortions until he was assassinated. (I think the vast majority of them were for medical reasons.) I dunno, Lucy, I think it’s strange to focus on the possibility that at some time in the future, under a law that we haven’t got a hope of getting passed because hardly anyone else thinks like us, some unlikely woman might make a couple of medical professionals feel morally icky. It’s like, sure, that might indeed end up being kinda shit. If it ever happened in a million years. :)

But really, how many women are gonna be all "fuck it, there's no abnormality, but let's kill an 8 months gestation foetus"? It's such an edge case it seems almost irrelevant. It's like Deborah and Bart said: anything other than the woman deciding is treating her like a moral infant (or worse: like a murderer-in-waiting).

All of what you said, plus: pro-choice women and feminists are really TIRED of engaging in arguments with bad faith abortion trolls and misogynists. We read these arguments over and over and over again, everywhere, in every comments section. Iain, if you're still out there: we've reached full capacity with this shit. We can't take any more of it on.

Again: no one's arguing that they're gonna get a weekly cleaner to do their bathrooms and twice-yearly beachside holidays in Rarotonga. We're talking about not getting rheumatic fever and not feeling like every week it's a choice between bread and milk and the electricity bill. Do you really think "welfare recipients" are kicking living standard ass, right now?
