Woah, late post all right here, only ran across the entire thing tonight clearly but whoever it was who above said:
"leagues and cups are different, and shouldn't be hybridised"
is right on the money. At least the Air NZ Cup is correctly named, it's a Cup, not a league.
Perhaps the NZRU is allergic to the whole idea of something that has the word 'league' anywhere near it, but for me it's home and away the whole way.
Sure, have a knockout Cup, that's cool (European rugby has the Heineken Cup, if there were a way to have a trans-Tasman or broader, trans-Pacific Cup perhaps, that could be cool - but maybe the Ranfurly Shield is the real Cup, only it's not a real Cup is it... hmm) however Haydn (how did you avoid an 'e' in your name BTW? And it's Manawatu also, not Manuwatu. Sorry, professionally anal there) your master plan falls down badly with a 9-round robin.
Personally I've been enjoying this year's provincial championship. Even that turgid Shield clash got exciting in the last 10 on the weekend, because suddenly Southland realised they could win. And that Auckland weren't all that.
But it has to be home and away if it's the main event. And direct promotion/relegation.
And, it can't be that predictable when Wellington have won in living memory. Several times. And may win again this year! Roll on the Shield challenge...
Finally, the EPL (to use ESPN speak) isn't dull. Yes, a salary cap would be a good idea, no, it won't happen. Not a new idea but: FA Cup winners should get direct Champions League entry, that would help re-incentivise that competition. Just 3 spots available from the EPL.
PS How good are Manawatu this year? Not bad. Impressive. Just have to say...

Can't really blame TVNZ for fixing up the error from Monty in post production though... why not fix a mistake? I would... in fact, I've done it many times, more in radio though.

Now, I'm happy to admit to technological shortcomings as much as the next perp but for some reason when I go to the so-called download page for this thread to get the free LEDs song, I instead get a streamed song... which is nothing like a download.
Russell, when you say "give away a free track" do you actually mean
"come and have a listen to this song" (just like on any MySpace page)
or do you mean "download this song here for free"...I'm running a new Macbook, surely there's no issue with the technology?
I don't personally care about listening to something once in a fixed location: I'd rather take it away and listen at my own leisure, with or without my computer and the interweb, you know?
Merely asking for clarification...

On the coverage of the BMX final (warning: sport nerdishness follows): I raced for six years in the 1980s, and thought it was great to see the sport finally make it to the Olympics, and to see not one but two New Zealanders in the finals first time round.
But after watching Sarah Walker's final live, I wanted to see again the crucial moment when she was blocked either before or during a jump in the middle of the race.
I taped One News's coverage on MySky in the expectation of at least one more view of that SECOND, which was the whole race for Walker after an average start... she did well to avoid the crashes and had she not been blocked right then she surely would have had a shot at a medal at least (the French rider who won was beyond reach but a silver was a possibility still, unbelievably).
But in a sprint, a second is all it takes... however on neither of the two stories TVNZ ran on the news on her final was that moment shown!
I mean, come ON!
Well, I did warn of the sports nerdishness. But that's really annoying, and I'm sure I'm not alone in this... picking holes perhaps but if there's two moments in a 40 second story, the start and that were it. Poor work there, TVNZ peeps.

And I always thought JM was a bit of a whinger, who played well when surrounded by others playing well.
I always thought Marshall was an extra loose forward, which can be useful in the league-style phase attack game played so often in the tight ones.
and let him talk. yappity yap, George Gregan, etc. halfbacks eh? even the big ones...
finally, I always reckoned Jonah was STILL a No.8. shoulda come back off the back, not out wide.
Howlett to score a hat-trick tomorrow.

sorry, only catching up on this thread now... (and dunno how youse all do that flash indented RE: thing above!)
"I'm of a view that anyone who tries as hard as people like Zoui and this dude to stay here they must really want to. For God's sake, its not like we are so special that we want to be sealing ourselves off from the world a la the USA or Australia, so we can fearfully peer through the venetian blinds at the border looking for Al Qaeda's football on the lawn all the bloody time"
I played football in an Auckland Saturday league this season against Ahmed Zaoui and 10 other, rather younger, Muslims... does the SIS know about this?
he was very good BTW. hit my crossbar with a shot from a difficult angle, ran things all day. luckily we played well enough to win but sheesh, I'd give him residency just on the off-chance his kids turn into decent All Whites...

Wikipedia can kiss my big ol' ass.
c'mon, we heard what the hell a
DAB (digital audio broadcasting)
was... consistency's all I ask. & yep I'm lazy - like average Joe.
and Apple is well over-rated, PC's really come around for me (apart from all those viruses). . .
but that's another issue.
