  • Hard News: It was 20 years ago tomorrow ...,

I remember Ice-T's 'High Roller' 12" hitting the shelves in mid '89. The most shocking cover I'd ever seen

She dressed like that over the three nights at The Siren / Box that year when Ice came to town. I spent most of a week with Tracy (as he is known to his mother) and Darlene and she wasn't that much less, uhh, startling in the flesh.

They bought All Blacks jerseys for the family back in LA..never heard of the team but loved the name.

I think '89 was a killer year for NZ music. There was a lot happening: the early dub stuff which was documented on the first DeepGrooves double 10", Upper Hutt Posse, the first South AK hip hop, Jazz Committee and much more. It just wasn't within RIANZ's radar.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

as if there was only two possible outcomes, a thriving Weimar Republic or its overthrow by Nazism.

yeah, I agree Chris. Whilst something was going to blow or come to a head in the 1930s, given all that went before and the powerful strands in German political extremism post Bismark, it may been very different if Wall Street hadn't tumbled.

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

JS, it's been an ongoing scare over the past 12 months. It started around the Bukit and Jimbaran and has slowly spread. 18 are dead so far, and the local health department has ignored all WHO advice to inoculate, and simply shot and poisoned the poor beasts, many of who, as you rightly point out, were in a fairly miserable way already.

The poor street dogs of Bali are shamefully treated as it is, as are many other animals, and the way this scare has been handled is cruelly incompetent.

I think the cull continues in Ubud right now, maybe taking time off for the current sport, extorting tens of thousands of dollars from Hollywood studios....nothing changes

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

I hope they eat them all before my next visit.

They've mostly gone, culled after the latest rabies scare, in a rather brutal fashion. I saw huge piles of the poor things in our road (off the tourist track of course) and a truck with at least 50 dead dogs in front of a tourist bus full of clearly distraught Japanese on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai.

Righto, back to the geographical bickering...

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

    tapi kapan saya di Manado

Orang-orang Bali suka dan makan anjing juga. Tetapi mereka tidak menceritakan touris! Kemarin di Denpasar..

[Sorry....talking about the partiality of certain parts of Indonesia to man's best friend as food, particularly the people of Manado and Bali (who don't admit it, amongst many things, to tourists).]

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

Rendang that does not look and taste like an Indian curry?

In Auckland, KKs in Greenlane seem to be about the only folks who can do one that would pass muster in your Warung Desa, tapi tak parkai RW.

  • Cracker: Mo' Better Reason,

where I almost died twice trying to run in 30 degree heat while smoking cheap asian cigs

I wondered what that disturbance in the force was....

No-one, and I mean absolutely no-one, runs up here unless there is a Sumatran feline close behind. The locals must have got quite some pleasure watching the bulé in training.

You wanna watch that heat, dude, it'll kill you.

Those kreteks will kill you on their own, no other input or exertion required.

  • Up Front: White in Brighton,

He formed a dub-influenced group as soon as he left the Pistols.

And more than that. He convinced Branson, at some expense, to go with him to Jamaica as the Pistols ended, to sign acts for the once mighty Virgin Front Line label, which at one time was arguably, partially because of the Sex Pistol, the most interesting Reggae label outside the isle. It introduced Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Clarke, The Mighty Diamonds, U-Roy, I-Roy, Keith Hudson, Culture, Gladiators and so much more to a wider audience.

I remember sitting in Taste Records in 1979 unpacking all those wondrous, post Lydon Front Line imports (with a bunch of equally widemouthed Auckland punks looking on). It's still a moment (or rather, a week or two as we immersed ourselves in this hitherto absolutely unobtainable treasure) that causes a shiver.

The weird thing is, I can recall a time when it was Auckland, not Christchurch, that had the skinhead types.

The irony in Auckland was that the original Skinhead movement was overwhelmingly Maori. And thus very much not, for all their other faults, racist. (With one exception, a very loud moron called Rocky, quite dark skinned, who used to parade onto stages chanting 'kill all blacks"). It evolved otherwise later, but most of those first generation skins had moved on.

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

I've already read it. The first 2 are the more essential reads, IMO. Third covers much covered ground, but I think I'd be doing a disservice to Evans fine work to not the finish the trilogy. And I think the way he uses Victor Klemperer's diaries takes it out of the archives and behind the doors of the nation's drawing rooms. They are important if just for that, and were not available to earlier historians (pre 95).
