Scan 'em to a hard drive in an open format. Slowly working through 40 odd years of photographs "Just in case".

Haining Street was where the unfortunate Joe Kum Yung met his end at the hand of the white supremacist Lionel Terry.
Yes.

Sorry, curiosity has gotten the better of me – that and the mention of opium dens and a street name that could easily be either Chinese or English. Wellington or Jiaxing?
Wellington. It was pretty much Wellington's Chinatown up until the 60's, I believe. See this google search for some references.

I sometimes feel that an interest in genealogy for some people is motivated by a desire to find some interesting or important relative in their past, so they can then bask in the reflected glory.
Yeah, nah. I mean, there are those who go looking for that, but sometimes it's just to make sure you don't marry your own cousin.
Stories about ordinary folk are more interesting.
Absolutely. Emma's right in that there's a desire to fill in the gaps, and my mother has written some freaky stories trying to do that, but I was just as happy finding out that my wastrel great-great grandfather was arrested for setting fire to the Martinborough Hotel, and was last heard of in the opium dens on Haining St.

I love that sort of history. People history, as opposed to stuff that gets taught in school. Doing genealogy with/for my mum has made me aware of so many stories of people I barely knew. And I wonder how many 21st century women are still writing/posting the same sort of details as your mum did in 1977. Except they'd prolly include a selfie sitting at the table ;-)

I’m not suggesting that as a solution here, this feels more like a culture problem rather than corruption.
A culture problem is what exists in the minds of the police and causes them to prejudice their dealings with victims of sexual assult. The corruption lies in what they have failed to do about it, preferring to protect their own rather than serve the public and denying victims the opportunity for justice, IMHO.

Just to add to Gio’s point: running a quick script on my own blog stats, whenever DPF and WhaleOil both link to one of my posts, DPF routinely sends over 15x as much traffic as Slater.
On other threads, we have generally agreed that Slater’s word is not to be trusted on the blog posts he writes. Why should we extend trust to his statistics?
As someone who used to manage websites, do SEO and fudge up analytics reports for money, it is ridiculously easy to game statistics. And even easier to straght out lie.

I don’t want to be in a table with Whaleoil, Kiwiblog, The Standard and The Daily Blog.
Bravo!

An interesting site I became aware of last night http://theharbour.org.nz/ which looks like it’s taking a good approach. There’s a similar site/organisation in Scotland called Havens.
