Grand Canal reflecting, outside Tongzhou East Gate (通州东关/Tōngzhōu Dōngguān - heh, just realised those are all 1st tones, hadn't occured to me before), looking in the Hangzhou direction on a blurry day. Though of course, it's a hell of a long way to Hangzhou by boat, and I'm not sure you could float all the way there these days....

Are you sure? Looks an awful lot like a satelite photo of the edge of a mountain range (to the south) and the beginnings of a well- and long-farmed plain.

Would it even be possible to spy effectively these days without in some way filtering all electronic communication?
I was under the impression that an awful lot of the USA's troubles in recent decades - perhaps even stretching as far back as Vietnam - were at least in part due to blind faith in technology and a lack of investment in good old fashioned human intelligence.

Well, my wife and daughter went ahead while I did some other stuff, then I caught up with them, and the wee one was indeed shouting "鱼游过来了！" (yú yóu guò lái le, fish swim over here!), then when she saw me she told me "Fish! Fish!"
