My strategy for getting around Auckland before I lived here was "keep on driving and you'll get to Newmarket and you'll know what to do from there". It worked amazingly well, many times over.
Now that I live here I still do that, but I really feel like I should make more of an effort.

Really? I thought it was in dire need of a good hard edit
Yeah, I enjoyed it overall but I do remember thinking that by page 49 we shouldn't still be pondering the view of the top of his Land Rover from the upper deck of the ferry, and should really get down to the drinking bit.

Yeah unfortunately once you start down the slippery coffee slope, it can be a wild ride. And I'm speaking as one who's recently plumbed a second hand commercial espresso machine into the kitchen. The results, however, are worth it!

Tom - $149 doesn't even get you in the game, sorry (assuming we're talking about espresso). Something like a second hand Mazzer from Trademe with new burrs might see you on your way for about $4-500 though. The upside is that what you spend on the grinder you can pretty much skimp on the machine; as long as it can keep good temp and pressure it should make good coffee given the perfect grind.
I'd be interested to know what Russell ended up with.

Alonso, with an S. He deserved the win after Ferrari's giant cock ups. Amazing looking track too, I'd like to get up there and watch that live.
No F1 drivers worth liking? I dunno, Sebastian Vettel and Robert Kubica look like they might be pretty decent in the long run.

There's a lot of bullshit that get talked about crime -- and perverted statistical molestation -- all over
For example, Jonathan Coleman telling us about all that rising crime & violence in his email newsletter from last week.
I signed up to the thing to see what he had to say, got nothing for ages and then he invited me along to the movies. A vehicle for informing folks about policy details it ain't...

Only one small problem with the Letterman lists. Every show also features David Letterman, rendering the whole thing unwatchable. Pity.

Heh that's my brother and his kid front and centre. Nice!

Love the Kraftwerk, have done ever since my mate Glyn introduced me to Autobahn in 4th form. Early Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream too.
If there's anyone who likes late-70's/early-80's Tangerine Dream as much as I do, check out SkinMechanix on Magnatune: http://www.magnatune.com/artists/skin_mechanix

do any cyclists care to comment on my modified shuttle bus idea, posted above?
I'm not currently a cyclist (I commute on foot from one end of the house to the other) but I have been in the past, and as a Shore dweller I think I can see a few chinks in this plan, such as where on earth are would you do the southbound pickup? Onepoto? Takapuna? The Albany park & ride?
I can think of a few reasons the old van system might have failed, such as people just not being aware of it. If you went for a walk near the bridge one day, thought that it might be nice to bike to work once in a while, what's the mystery next step to knowing that there's a van that'll pick you up? If there's a lane across the bridge then it's pretty obvious how to get there and I reckon people would use it.
