  • Up Front: Hellfire's a Promise Away,

Is there a word for when you make a typo and it turns out better or more appropriate than what you actually intended?

I find the choice is mush of a mushness where I'm typing in the afternoon

My conversations with my daughters run along mush the same line as Fletcher's
Except the eldest is sure that after you are a mummy you then get to become a daddy...

Days without internet access, whatever will you do - unpack all the boxes you just packed up.

Basic rules of shifting is rather like PJ O'Rourke's travel rules
    1. never run out of whisky
    2. never run out of whisky

the plethysmograph was used to stop people dodging the draft by pretending to be gay

I'm surprised that the reverse was not tried, find and remove all the gays in the military.

What are the reasons for peoples (negative) reactions when they find out someone is gay/bi?
There is the 'it's wrong' when there is a direct conflict with their ideology/worldview - which may not have been examined in any depth by the holder of that ideology
Then there are the cases mentioned above where being bi is seen as 'greedy' or 'can't make up your mind'. Which seems to be another ideology conflict.
So it is just ideology how ever uniformed it is, or is there something more that causes the reactions people have and makes coming out so fraught?

I could imagine people being out to close friends and family, but not at work and other places, just because people knowing about your sexuality shouldn't give you that much grief.

My uncle came out a while back, now one of his brothers won't speak to him and even keeps all the children away from him at family gatherings.
Be easier at work where it doesn't (shouldn't) have any impact on how you do your job.

  • Hard News: Because They Could,

The Listener recently ran a story speculating on the role of Blue State Digital -- one of two key companies behind Obama 08's joined-up digital media strategy -- in the New Zealand Labour campaign. T'would have been a fine thing, but I gather Blue State would have cost roughly the entire campaign budget. That might have been a trifle risky.

Call me old fashioned, but while a joined-up digital media strategy would be a fine thing I prefer a campaign from all parties that has a) more detail on policy and b) some vision or something I could get enthused about.
I find myself both hoping it will all be over soon and dreading what will come in the aftermath.

I really need to win Lotto and stop working so I can concentrate on something worthy

    Amen
One of the problems with this thread is now my Must Read pile (aka the spare room) is growing far too large, same with the Must Reread pile (aka the downstairs library), while only a few are falling into the Don't Read pile

    Damn you Emma Hart

there's only one thing that could rescue austen novels.

ninjas. or maybe a mafia shoot-out. or maybe the ghost of both

Emma wanted Austen crossed over with Die hard - Pride and Extreme Prejudice

  • Up Front: The Classics Are Rubbish Too,

Why would you start a sodding novel with the word "renowned"?

But would you start reading one that began "It was a Thursday my Grandmother exploded"?
