  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Farmer Green,

But I’m in the Rangitikei electorate , and I never heard of Deborah Russell until I read this thread.

Articles in every local newspaper, advertising in every local newspaper, leaflets into every single letterbox in the electorate, attended every single event I was invited to, set up various events, held about 50 street corner meetings in towns and villages in the electorate, visited schools throughout the electorate, did so much work that the incumbent National MP was forced to lift his game, even had the incumbent National MP saying nice things about me. (I had nice things to say about him too: he is a gentleman, and although we fought hard over policy at debates, all of us in Rangitikei ran a very civil campaign.)

I really worked hard to get myself known, and judging by the number of people greeting me by name in the last couple of weeks of the campaign, and saying things like, "Hey, you're that Labour lady," I think did pretty well.

Finding out about candidates in your electorate is a two way responsibility. There was plenty of information out there about me, all of it easily found, and most of it put right in front of people in the electorate.

  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Raymond A Francis,

@Raymond, there was an NZ First candidate in the mix this time. 2000 or so NZF party votes there last time, so I'm guessing that some of the non-National vote moved around in ways that I can't quite work out yet. I'll do some serious number crunching on it once the special votes are in.

  • Hard News: The sole party of government,

Thanks for nothing, Tom. So nice to be criticised so much on the day after I've just fought a huge battle in a rural electorate, the very first campaign I've ever run, for which people have had high praise.

Labour Party vote in Rangitikei always comes in about 6 to 7% below Labour party vote nationwide. So my 18% party vote in Rangitikei is about what is to be expected there.

My personal candidate vote is about 27%. That's just 1% below what Josie got in 2011, in what was regarded as an excellent campaign.

So actually, in my first ever outing, I think I did fine. Your criticism is misguided, and mean spirited.

  • Speaker: Why I'm standing in Ilam, in reply to ,

Adult and community education - we've got a policy on that too.

    Adult and community education

    Labour will:
Restore $13m per year for Adult and Community Education
Another $9m per year on top of that from 2018
$1m per year of extra funding for ACE English for speakers of other languages (ESOL)

This is partly why I'm getting grumpy about people saying, "Where's the policy?" As it turns out, we have a heap of policy out there.

Comprehensive Labour policies for Christchurch all available here:

    Policies for Christchurch

I'd read through them and give you chapter and verse myself, but I've got to race out the door to a candidates' forum.

Also, bravo James and Stephen. I really, really appreciate the magnitude of the task you have taken on. From the inside.

  • Hard News: Didn't see that coming,

The outburst by Pam Corkery acheived the objective of getting the National Party launch out of the top spot on the news. I've been wondering whether it was a deliberate spoiling tactic. Or maybe all that happened was that Mr Dotcom or some other seniopr person in IMP asked Ms Corkery to go outside and distract the press so that he could make a getaway, and the rest was unscripted, but very very effective at getting the top spot on both TVNZ and TV3 news.

    Attachment

It has been pretty much equal opportunity vandalism in my part of the country. My party has lost heaps of its signs, and so have the other parties. It's very, very frustrating. I've had a few signs damaged on country sites, but that has turned out to be wind damage.

Idiots and wind, every time. No need to read anything significant into it, other than hoons will be hoons.

  • Hard News: The crybaby philosopher,

I've studied philosophy a bit too. Quite a lot, in fact. When it comes to political philosophy in particular, I'd lay good odds that I've studied rather more that Dr Whyte has. (If that link doesn't work, FTR it takes you to my doctoral thesis in ... political philosophy.)

What strikes me about his arguments in political philosophy is that they are largely context free ie. he sees only very minimal premises, and as a result of that a rather threadbare conclusion. He doesn't see the rich context around the premises, and as a result, his arguments just don't work. That's what makes political philosophy interesting and difficult: you simply must be aware of context and history.

Of course, it also helps if you get the facts right. Comparing Maori to aristocrats of the Ancien Régime is bizarre.
