  • Hard News: The Velvet Underground Etc., in reply to Barnard,

but 6 more discs without anything really new is just a bit much.

Now now. The new box has the mono and stereo versions of the album.

  • Hard News: The Velvet Underground Etc.,

You can buy the record and the songs on it every digital whichway now -- not least on this year's six-disc (yes, really) reissue package

Because I'm a VU fanboy I have ordered this. It will fit nicely next to the five-CD box Peel Slowly and See from 1995.

Cricket in NZ is up against not only Union & League, but Rowing, Basketball, Hockey, Football, all of which dilute the quality of the athletes & resources available to NZ cricket.

  • Hard News: Crossing the line into idle bigotry, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

But it’s not fucking subtle at all – if anyone wants to equate all Catholics of Irish descent with the IRA I’ll have some words to share.

Of course you are right, and the IRA - Catholics comparison is a useful illustration of people conflating political and religious motives and then ascribing them to the one they dislike the most. Thus anything the IRA does (or did) is becuse they are Catholics and anything the Taliban does is because they are Muslims. It's easier that way.

  • Hard News: Crossing the line into idle bigotry,

Malala was not, of course, shot by "the Muslims", but by members of a movement rooted as much in a patriarchal tribal culture as Islamist extremism.

That distiction is probably a bit too subtle for Mr Cox. Also, it doesn't fit his narrative.

Eric Dondero, who I think Russell linked to earlier, really is full of the win.

Surely the guy is some kind of political performance artist.

…and they just love a good Civil War, and heck, they haven’t had one at home for a while…

The language they use: filth unfit to live, degenerates, dregs etc is very similar to what has been used in the lead-up to any number of bloody conflicts.

These are probably just stupid blow-hards, but a bit of historical awareness would come in handy for them.

ETA: but that's pretty unlikely, I know...

For SF geeks out there, I couldn't resist sharing Orson Scott Card losing all his shit in a manner that makes The Trumpernator look cool, calm and collected.

    Man! That's a rant and a half!

Seeing The Cramps live was always a totally wild experience. Just seeing that photo makes me want to chug a bottle of cheap red straight down.

Some person or group has made a decision about the cost/benefit of acting on concerns raised.

Never attribute to cost/benefit analysis that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
